9-2 WIN: SO 12-3 OVER PRICEWISE: Thanks to Astaire (WON 9-2), Daqman got another one over Pricewise yesterday, and danced 12-3 clear in their challenge since the start of the Flat. It came the day after Daqman’s 20-point banker success with Fascinating Rock (WON 9-10).

SCOTTISH NATIONAL TOMORROW: Says Daqman: ‘My strike rate is currently low but, if we restrict betting to the best races, we are still going strong. And we have some big-odds tilts at the layers to come, like the Scottish National at the Ayr meeting which opens today.’

BEGGAR PRIMED FOR A REPEAT AT NEWBURY

2.50 Newbury My trials headline yesterday was ‘Moheet might be another Hannon tornado.’ I think he might well prove that.. when he’s ready to run a race!

In fact, though totally misleading on the day, the Craven could prove to be the best trial so far, with White Lake also showing well for the future, despite Luca Cumani’s zero wins in 2015.

This 2.50 today was won last year by the subsequent Sandown Classic Trial winner from the John Gosden stable, and Gosden goes in again with Star Of Seville.

It’s very much a Gosden meeting (see 3.25 race, below). Star Of Seville and Fillies’ Mile third Winters Moon are the two 1,000 Guineas candidates but the one for the money this morning was Ooty Hill, a Dubawi grey to be ridden by Ryan Moore. The stable is in form.

3.25 Newbury John Gosden (Sugar Boy) is three wins from three starters in this since 2010, and 11 of his 17 runners this year have finished in the first four. Sugar Boy’s form suggests he is an improver.

Sir Michael Stoute, who saddles The Queen’s Capel Path, got off the mark for 2015 yesterday, after 17 losers.

Charlie Appleby, who won the Earl of Sefton with French Navy for Godolphin, runs Group-3 fourth Strong Chemistry but the colt has to give weight all round.

3.55 Newbury The yards of Robot Boy and Noble Storm have started well but Lucky Beggar won this last year with Steps, third at levels, now having to give 6lb.

He’s had a run back and should be up to playing his usual front-running role here, with Jamie Spencer putting up two fingers to his critics yesterday with a well-judged catch-me-if-you-can Abernant win on Astaire, albeit helped by having a game horse under him.

5.00 Newbury Recent winners of this have started at huge prices: 25-1 (three times), 20-1 and 16-1 since 2008.

I fancied Our Folly (stable in form; Tom Queally booked) as a 10-1 plus outsider today – that was his paper forecast – but woke up to find him top-rated by the Racing Post. And favourite, or thereabouts, in the early-mouse BETDAQ exchanges.

PENNY’S IMPROVED IN DEFEAT BY CLASS HORSES

2.00 Ayr Absolute rock-bottom weights have won this three years running, and Tom Scudamore – due to ride Broadway Buffalo in tomorrow’s National – is up at Ayr a day early solely for the handicap debut of Jack Steel.

2.30 Ayr The Many Clouds combo of Oliver Sherwood and Leighton Aspell have Come On Laurie in this (and see also 4.45).

But it’s a hard race of novices mixed with seniors, and with at least two potential front runners (Coologue and Special Agent) to make the race sing.

3.05 Ayr Three times a winner at Ayr, Tap Night, fourth last year off 145, has crashed in the ratings to 128, and is back to his right trip for the first time since January and with Tony McCoy up.

Mwaleshi, Brave Spartacus and Ultimate (all back-and-lay possibilities) should put strong pace to the race, and the drying ground will suit Shadows Lengthen, Hollow Penny and Presenting Junior.

Hollow Penny won three handicaps on a sound surface last autumn but arguably has improved since, with decent displays behind quality horses at Wincanton, Kempton and Cheltenham. He deserves this.

4.10 Ayr Peter Bowen, who travelled all the way up from Welsh Wales and won this race last year, is back for more of the same with Rons Dream, 4lb ahead of the handicapper on future ratings and, as a Kayf Tara, highly likely to be suited by the step up to 3m.

Will the extra trip help her turn the tables – a few pounds better off – on Spartan Angel who finished in front of her in the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle Finale at Newbury in March?

On soft going, I might say ‘yes.’ But Spartan Angel should be a better mare on this sounder surface, holds Gabriella Rose (through Rons Dream) and gets more than a stone from the McCoy mount Run Ructions Run.
