MIDNIGHT CHIMES IN NOVICES CHASE
1:20 Novices’ Chase (Registered As The Dipper Novices’ Chase) (Grade 2) (5yo+, Class 1, 2m 4f 166y, 7 runners)
Plenty will have seen midnight (and beyond last night!) and I think Seeyouatmidnight could be the answer to a tricky, but highly competitive novices chase with plenty of future clues to be gleaned. The lightly raced eight-year-old won at this level over hurdles and also finished seventh in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle behind Cole Harden at the Festival last year. He got off the mark over fences at Kelso in style last time out and could take some pegging back. He is likely to make the running and loves the testing ground.

1:55 Handicap Chase (Grade 3) (5yo+, Class 1, 2m 4f 166y, 11 runners)
This looks more competitive than the 1,000 piece jigsaw I got for Christmas (I struggle when it gets past the straight bits). Mon Successeur likes the ground testing and arrives here on the back of a good win at Ascot when quickening clear approaching the last and beating Mountain King by an easy seven lengths. The Paul Nicholls stable form remains a concern and I will cover with a place bet. Incredibly, Mon Successeur himself was the last winner for the stable back on the 19th December and the form of his runners since then has been 562040U3436F24P37P3P6622223P.
TOP LOOKS NOTCH ABOVE RIVALS
3:05 Relkeel Hurdle (Grade 2) (5yo+, Class 1, 2m 4f 56y, 8 runners)
Surprise Ladbrokes World Hurdle winner Cole Harden returns to the track after a creditable reappearance run at Newbury when third to Thistlecrack. He should make a bold attempt but the suspicion is the trip will prove on the sharp side this afternoon. Preference is for Top Notch who surely deserves to get his head in front. He was pipped a neck by stable companion Peace And Co in the the Triumph Hurdle and has since filled second spot behind Irving at Haydock and went within a neck of beating Identity Thief in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle last time out. The winner ran a cracker behind Nichols Canyon in the Ryanair Hurdle at Leopardstown over Christmas and the form looks Rock Solid. There are often reasons to oppose horses with form figures of 222 but not in this case.
RAP THE NAP
Koothrappali stands out in a desperately poor maiden at Southwell. David Barron has an excellent record at the track and even though Koothrappali hasn’t achieved a great deal – he does have ability and plenty of experience which I always like at this testing track. The debutant Red Chatterbox looks more of a danger than BETDAQ second favourite Bring On A spinner who was a very modest third at Brighton.
