WHAT MORE DOES HE WANT? NAPS: Stop complaining Daqman! You still have 11 winning naps out of the last 16 (the sequence is 1111141231311114).

WHAT MORE DOES HE WANT? BANKERS: Those naps include seven consecutive winning bankers. And his Bull’s-Eye Bets are 211 points in profit.

WHAT MORE DOES HE WANT? VALUE: Though Pricewise got one back yesterday, Daqman still leads 67-31 in their Flat-season challenge (overall 106-43).

DOYLE WAS THE CHAMPION ON THE DAY

It’s traditional for a punter to blame the jockey. In this case two jockeys. It’s called riding the races from the grandstand. But I thought it was rather pointed of trainer Roger Charlton to say: ‘James Doyle won it.’

Taking nothing away from Noble Mission – in hindsight, the grand grinder-out of the race – the Champion Stakes was parcelled up and posted home by a supreme Doyle delivery.

Charlton’s Al Kazeem was no lesser hero, returning to the big time from his failure at stud, but jockey George Baker just couldn’t hold him on a line or get the final impetus to win. He patted Doyle on the back just yards past the post. The best man won.

And last year it was Doyle who ‘made’ Al Kazeem, taking five in a row, including St James’s Palace Stakes and Eclipse.

The top girl did not win the Champion Fillies and Mares yesterday, with my bet, Chicquita, known to wobble in the closing stages, brought far too soon, well over a furlong out, hanging badly to ‘give the race away’ to Madame Chiang.

I’m not talking through my pocket (chiang, chiang) but I am talking about one back for Pricewise in our challenge. And a black mark for Chicquita’s jockey, Joseph O’Brien, for riding the race not riding the horse under him.

He looked all arms and legs, coming too soon, loose-reined (have a look at a reprise) and unable to crouch and control. I had a bad weekend. But I wasn’t alone.

THE ‘ONE’ FOR BANKER NUMBER EIGHT

There are two ways to get back on track as a punter. One is buying money in bankers (I’ve had seven in a row) The other is waiting for big value and moving in for a kill. Let’s do both in this column.

4.25 Kempton The New One is my short-shot to repeat his success of last year in the same race at Kempton this afternoon, with the BETDAQ market this morning 40.0 bar two.

That takes in Forgotten Voice as the only serious danger. Though he’s getting the weight (8lb), he’s giving three years away, and has to find 23lb on official ratings.

2.15 Kempton All Set To Go and Stars Over The Sea are Group contenders on the Flat, off 102 and 96, literally stones in front of some of these.

They went for Stars Over The Sea this morning but he’s got a touch of the Chicquita’s about him. I don’t like to see ‘hung right.. awkward.. slowly into stride.. struggling to quicken’ sequentially in a horse’s form.

MANATEE CAN MAN UP TO WIN IN PARIS

1.30 Longchamp (Prix de Conde) Epicuris and Big Blue for the top guns, Andre Fabre, and Criquette Head-Maarek, are fronting the market but have to defy the stats to win.

Big Blue has won only on a provincial course and both he and Epicuris have raced only once. Past winners of this have had at least two starts on their CV, at least one win, and all success on major tracks.

There’s a game of musical jockeys going on in retainer switches in France, and Maxime Guyon, who won on Big Blue at Compiegne, switches to Harry Dunlop’s Red Tornado.

2.40 Longchamp (Prix du Conseil de Paris) On form, it’s hard to see past Norse King for the Cirrus Des Aigles stable (he was third to Cirrus Des Aigles and Treve in the Spring).

Winner of this race last year, Norse King is a hold-up horse, who has a pacemaker, Garlingari, but I think the stayer Manatee will want to go with Garlingari and Norse King isn’t the greatest of finishers. Manatee might be able to get away. The betting hadn’t sorted itself out when I made my selection, so I’m betting Manatee to SP.

McMANUS UNCORKS FORMIDABLE DUO

3.25 Cork (Kinsale Chase) Fosters Cross will no doubt set his suicidal pace. He can still trailblaze home in small fields but this tough, open handicap (6.4 the field as I write) might see him fade to a lightweight.

J P McManus has two right at the bottom of the handicap, one an eponymously formidable opponent, the other, Gentleman Duke, only six but primed with a hurdles prep, and backed in to 6.2 on BETDAQ this morning.

Formidableopponent was receiving 9lb from Fosters Cross when backed to beat him at the Galway festival but unseated rider. Here he now is, getting 16lb. yet 13.5 in the orange.

DAQMAN’S BETS (bet to win 20 points except stated and banker. French bet at SP as detailed above)
BET (to win 20 points) 11pts win ALL SET TO GO (2.15 Kempton)
BET 3.8pts win GENTLEMAN DUKE, and 1.6pts win and place FORMIDABLEOPPONENT (3.25 Cork)
BANKER: BET 20pts win (nap) THE NEW ONE (4.25 Kempton)
FRENCH BET: 10pts win MANATEE (2.40 Longchamp)
