SNOW FORECAST FOR THE MAROIS

3.15 Deauville (Prix Jacques le Marois) Placed horses in the English (Al Wukair third, good to firm) and Irish Guineas (Thunder Snow second, yelding) clash over this Deauville mile on very soft ground.

Three-year-olds have done well against older horses this year but the Newmarket Guineas form has been overtaken, and failed the test at Maisons-Lafitte last month.

The easy winner that day, Taareef, stopped Al Wukair (1m good, Group 3), albeit with the second-season colt to some extent forfeiting his chance at the start (slowly away).

Since his Curragh Guineas, Thunder Snow has won the Prix Jean Prat (1m good at Chantilly) from Group-3-winning three-year-olds, Trais Fluors and Gold Luck, who take him on again today.

Today’s difference among this little collection of nearly horses is the ground. Al Wukair and Trais Fluors have not won on soft, but Inns Of Court loves the mud. His success has come at Group-3 level. That’ may be just as good as the others but what puts you off is his poor effort in the French Guineas.

The verdict has to be for Thunder Snow, who won on ‘muddy’ ground in Meydan, and fnished close up to Barney Roy on a fast surface for the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. Looks huge at 5.9 on BETDAQ as I write.

SIOUX RISING LIKE A PHOENIX..

2.30 The Curragh The ‘could be anything’ warning applies here to Futurity and National Stakes entry Swiss Cottage, Derby-entry The King, highly-regarded Andesh and $3m-dollar yearling Mendelssohn for Aidan O’Brien whose form figures in this are 141 since its inception.

This morning on BETDAQ, I could win 17 for every 10 bet on Mendelssohn and, with big improvement forecast for the Scat Daddy colt, might look back on this race and be glad of it.

3.35 The Curragh (Phoenix Stakes) Looking for the 2018 Guineas winner? Then you may want to swerve this trial. Air Force Blue (2015) was all the rage for Newmarket after winning this but didn’t train on. Caravaggio (2016) became a sprinter.

Both were trained by Aidan O‘Brien, who has won this seven times since 2008, but spoils the race for Ballydoyle punters by monopolising the field with four of the eight runners. But will he monopolise the race?

The Railway Stakes winner, Beckford, looks formidable opposition, though this firm ground is an unknown for him but 2.66 on BETDAQ looks short and 4.7 Sioux Nation value for form reasons.

At this time of year, you are looking to collateral form, cross patterns to suggest dominance in one particular line, and Sioux Nation stands out in that respect.

From a slow start (behind US Navy Flag) at The Curragh in May, he surprised at 14-1 in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, beating Cardship two lengths before that one stopped US Navy Flag in the July Stakes with the Coventry Stakes winner in third.

4.10 The Curragh (Phoenix Sprint) Sprint form is in and out at this Group-3 level but it might be worth taking a punt on Koropick at 9.6 on BETDAQ this morning.

Didn’t like it soft at Newbury but had earlier beaten Kimberella (great yardstick having a great season) and ran second to the then unknown – now a champion – Battaash in a Listed at Sandown.
