TIGER LOOKS TASTY AT BETDAQ 15.0

4.20 The Curragh (Irish Cesarewitch) Only one winner over the age of five in 14 seasons – three-year-olds are currently four out of six – and young, unexposed horses can step up in trip here.

You need to be nearer the top of the handicap than the bottom, with 10 of the last 16 winners rated 89 to 94, but a bit of help from an apprentice jockey is useful with five wins in the last six seasons for 3lb and 5lb claimers.

Trainers of Marchese Marconi and Majenta, second and fourth last year, try to squeeze more juice out of them with blinkers on ‘Marchese’ and a 7lb claimer on Majenta.

Majenta’s had only two runs this season, as if she’s had problems, though she looked prepped for this on the last day, whereas Marchese Marconi has been winning races and finished second in August to yesterday’s Newmarket Cesarewitch fifth, Digeanta.

Another one lightly raced, Grecian Tiger, finished in front of a whole bunch of these when second to Quick Jack at Galway and is a tasty 15.0 on BETDAQ this morning.

Of the English raiders, Brian Ellison’s pair have not performed up to the level of his winner last year. Clive Cox’s Hassle has had a fair season but comes out behind Amanda Perrett’s Blue Surf on a line through Kashgar.

Strangely, Blue Surf’s defeat of Kashgar at Goodwood last month was the only 2m race of his career and no doubt that run prompted connections to come here.

Winter Lion has improved 22lb since August, according to the handicapper but first-time cheekpieces for a losing run on the last day has me worried, though maybe the firm ground was against him.

Despite their ages, Clondaw Warrior, Ted Veale and Hidden Universe cannot be discounted, but the stats say that an improver invariably comes along to foil the old boys. I’m going with Galway form and taking Grecian Tiger and Cliff House.

Cliff House is a very tough sort who has been talked of as a potential hurdles star for the winter. Finished close up in a big handicap at the Galway Festival and was given a fast pipe-opener over less than a mile recently.

The 26.0 in the orange on BETDAQ this morning was one thing but I thought the 9.8 place in the green was massive.

5.10 Limerick (Munster National) Solid chasers, seven or eight years old (9 out of 10 in the decade) win this often from the foot of the handicap (six carried 10st 4lb or less).

With two winners, including Muirhead, since 2005, Noel Meade has laid his stall out for it again, with four runners, booking three of the best jockeys in Ireland (Paul Carberry, Ruby Walsh and Niall Madden) and handing claimer Ger Fox his chance on the hooded Protaras.

Bose Ikard beat Please Talk so easily at Roscommon in August that he will be my Meade hope. Tom Horn (presumably preferred by Carberry) has been a talking horse and has got his ground, though winner of only minor races.

I fancied Heaney ‘for another year’ when he ran fifth in this last season but the year has come round and he’s done ‘nothing’ since. Could bounce back but looks risky.

He was pulled up when Shanpallas was third in the Kerry National in September, with several of these behind. Shanpallas’ problem is that he’s up another 3lb for that and he, too, hasn’t actually won very much.

Golden Wonder is probably a better bet among the high weights, where Raajih is the one in form, having won at Perth in September, and Usual Smurfer is another six-year-old with scope.

But the stats warn us to stay low in the handicap, so it must be Bose Ikard, with Ruby Walsh prepared to shed some summer-holiday pounds to get down to 10st 3lb.

14.5 PERCY WILL LOVE THE GROUND

What can go wrong? The best laid plans etc. First post (5.45 Goodwood) is so obviously lined up with both luck and trainer skill on his side that it’s hard to talk myself out of a bet.

He’s won the race for the last two years. He’s got his ground. He’s 2lb lower than when scoring last season. He’s got a useful low draw again, stall 1 against the stall 3 he won from in 2013. How bad, how bad, how bad!

Soft ground gives Percy Alleline (3.05) a big chance, dropped in class and visored for the first time. There are several with better form claims but his family loves the mud: 14.5 early mouse on BETDAQ.

Nothing was better backed early mouse than Soviet Courage (5.15), who could turn out to be a cut above his field, and has already shown a liking for the soft.

DAQMAN’S BETS (each to win 20 points)
BET 1.4pts win and place PERCY ALLELINE (3.05 Goodwood)
BET 1.4pts win and place GRECIAN TIGER, and 0.8pts win and place CLIFF HOUSE (4.20 The Curragh)

BET 11pts win (nap) SOVIET COURAGE (5.15 Goodwood)
BET 5pts win FIRST POST (5.45 Goodwood)
