WEATHER: Even the weather is looking brighter as we turn the year with a busy racing schedule. Both Uttoxeter and Warwick passed morning inspections.

HEAVY GROUND BUT WE’RE RACING

Being a racing tipster is hard enough at times but thank goodness I chose this route rather than being a weather forecaster. It looked odds-on that BOTH Uttoxeter and Warwick would be called off today with the torrential downpours yesterday but both have survived and will race on heavy ground.

Looking further ahead to next year (it’s not all that FURTHER !!) and the New Year’s Day meeting at Exeter is now subject to an 8am precautionary inspection on raceday morning. The course are sounding hopeful, although may need to doll off some fences.

ARISE, SIR AP

Great news that AP McCoy has been awarded a knighthood in the Queen’s New Year Honours list. Whatever your views on the awards system (and there’s been plenty of dubious gongs handed out over the years) recognition of AP as a brilliant sportsman is surely warranted. His careeer record is well documented but still hard to fathom. Champion jockey for 20 consecutive seasons and 4,358 career wins. There’s setting the bar high and setting it at a ridiculous level.

2015 OVER AND OUT

As we saw at Taunton yesterday – heavy ground takes some ploughing through at this time of the year and it will very much be the case at Uttoxeter today. Stamina is needed in abundance together with the ability to handle the ground. Over My Head looks the answer to the 2m 7f handicap hurdle at 1.50. His only career win to date came over three miles here on heavy ground where he made all the running to win by 19 lengths with 39 lengths back to the third and 16 lengths back to the fourth !! He comes here on the back of a good effort at Southwell and should prove hard to peg back today.

AMERICA TO WIN THIS BATTLE

I want to be against top weight Battle Dust in the 1.10 at Warwick. He had to work really hard to win at Chepstow earlier in the month and that effort may have left its mark. The handicapper has certainly taken no chances with him and he looks harshly treated on handicap debut. Preference is for yesterday’s easy Haydock winner American Life who has a 7lb penalty but won with such ease that a follow-up looks on the cards. He is still running at the time of writing but keep an eye on the situation.

LARS BET OF THE YEAR

The 2.00 at Lingfield is the Bet Now With The Ladbrokes App Apprentice Selling Stakes and is a race that will take little winning. Official ratings are usually to be treated with caution in low level races as horses tend to be more inconsistent and unreliable but I think Captain Lars (comfortably top on official ratings on a mark of 80) is an exception as he comes into the race on the back of a decent effort at the track last time over a slightly shorter trip. This race looks weaker if anything.

That’s all for today, and for this year.

See you bright and early on the other side. Best wishes to all readers for a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2016.
