DAQMAN IN WINNING MOOD: Alcaeus (WON 3-1) and Plutocracy (WON 10-11) gave Daqman a profitable day yesterday, thanks to his staking plan in which one winner covers the rest of the bets.

DAQMAN IN WHINGEING MODE: Today’s return to cold weather has him in a wintry mood, complaining about the going, the stewards and the TV coverage. But he employs the same betting plan at the foot of the column.

CHANNEL-4: So what’s not to like about the new Channel-4 set-up? I was shocked to see a 4-1 vote for the old team in the current Racing Post dot com poll. So I asked Bill down the betting shop.

As you know, persuading Bill to buy a computer and enjoy the luxury of BETDAQ betting is my life’s work. He is the sort of conservative that even Cameron despairs of this week.

Coming from Bill, of whom ‘opinionated’ would not be the word – something stronger-‘minded’ (but this is a family show) – his answer to the Channel-4 question was ironic, but here it is; what do you think:

The new lot are all opinionated and bloated with ‘facts’. They bang on and on about a horse and, at the end of it, you may know every hair on every horse’s hide, but are left confused about the likely winner.

Man in the street has spoken. Vox Pop is on his platform. Go on, then, Bill: what more? What ingredients do you want most?

Answer: ‘Interviews with trainers are not what they were? And I think it’s because they are getting a bit personal.

‘The old team used to get a lot of information. They had the knack. Now they are asking questions which are grating, or which send some trainers and jockeys running for cover.

‘They can’t mix newshounding with seeking information for betting. After confrontation with one man, appealing pleasantries with another sound like wheedling. It just gets backs up and scares people off.’

Bill, you’re learning, old son. Now how about a word in your ear that Channel-4 can’t pronounce. It’s about fair-play betting where you know the offers are genuine, the amount you can bet is detailed, and the ‘book’ in which you bet is value for money. It’s called BETDAQ.

FRANKIE DETTORI: This is the age of rules and tick-boxes. Little men made bigger by the powers of the bureaucracy they represent. What always gets lost is commonsense and, therefore, humanity and reason.

Dettori has come clean. And all the evidence says he IS now clean. To watch the man bare his soul on television and then apply more red-tape is nothing short of torture.

STEWARDS’ INQUIRY: Where are the Stewards when the punter needs them? I have seen diabolical reversals of form and false anticipation in the market (i.e., we poor mugs had backed the wrong horse!) but no inquiry.

Memphis Tennessee was made 6-5 favourite for the Ormonde Stakes but trailed in 35 lengths behind the winner, Mount Athos. No stewards’ inquiry.

Toronado was the talking horse before the 2,000 Guineas – ‘best I’ve ridden’, Richard Hughes – but he was well out of the picture at the business end, trailing in nearly eight lengths behind Dawn Approach, with a 150-1 shot in front of him. No stewards’ inquiry.

Declaration of War Gamble of the Lockinge, in to 6-5 favourite. Only 5th, more than 11 lengths behind the winner. No stewards’ inquiry.

Gallipot This one’s different. Not different in that he was gambled-on favourite. Not different in that he flopped more than 12 lengths behind the winner in Saturday’s 1m 5f Listed at Newbury.

Different because, when asked on Channel-4 before the race, trainer John Gosden warned against backing him; today was not the day. Incidentally, you guessed it, no stewards’ inquiry.

Ok, let’s hear the chorus of disapproval: horses are not machines; they didn’t know they were favourite; the three-year-old may not have trained on; every horse is allowed an off day, and a dozen more besides.

But that’s not the point. The point is that, when a ‘hot’ horse runs badly, and there is no explanation known to the punter, it discredits racing, and brings the game into disrepute.

The punter needs to know what’s what if only because next time the horse runs he will make an even worse assessment: will it bounce back or has it proved to be tripe and doesn’t know its onions?

In no other sport are the fans hit in the pocket, no wiser after the event. No recourse except to drop out, lose interest, bet blind or save their money.

Of course, we know how busy the stewards are, swapping bits of paper with the French about drugs, clocking the number of swipes of a cardboard whip, to name but a few, as they say.

But at least Channel 4 got one interview right, though you can hardly go wrong with J Gosden. One day he’ll give up training, and I’ll campaign like hell for him to be racing supremo. I hope you will, too.

THE GOING: Consistency was never the stewards’ strongpoint; nor is it with clerks of courses and their groundstaff.

The Going Stick method of labeling the nature of the ground must be used on all racecourses. Meanwhile, we need its gradations to be recognizable and be able to have confidence in them.

Today, with the weather disparate between North and South, West and East, I woke up to my usual worries about the ground, and turned to the Racing Post website.

I there discovered that 9.8 at Towcester and 8.0 at Pontefract were both described as ‘good’ yet 8.1 at Brighton was ‘good to firm’ and 7.9 at Nottingham ‘good to soft,’ though ‘good to soft, soft in places’ at Newcastle was 6.3.

Where are we? Do we use the figures, and trust only the figures, and ignore the going epithets? Or is it the case that the actual ground in which the ‘pogo sticks’ are thrust is different from place to place, and some allowance has to be made?

Or is it that the nature of the ‘thrust’ is a gentle drop at one track, but spear-throwingly, arm-swingingly hard at another? I think we should be told.

DAQMAN’S BETS
BET 2pts win and place LORD FRANKLIN (3.00 Newcastle)
BET 4pts win DARING INDIAN 1.25pts win and place GETABUZZ (6.50 Pontefract)
BET 6.25pts win MASTER CARPENTER (7.20 Pontefract)
BET 4pts win (nap) NULLARBOR SKY (8.20 Pontefract)
DAQ MULTIPLES: 3pts win double KIKONGA (3.50 Nottingham) and MALACHIM MIST (7.20 Pontefract)

DAQMAN’S TARGETS: Sub-standard day. Bets to win 20 points, except Daq Multiples at SP. One winner in the singles covers all other stakes.

2000 GUINEAS: A blank day in Ireland today so SHAMROCK looks ahead to Saturday’s 2000 Guineas at the Curragh and the BETDAQ ante-post market.

It’s a blank day of Irish racing and SHAMROCK had a blank day yesterday too after his nap Lady Giselle was withdrawn at the start at Roscommon after an injury to the jockey.

It’s a wide open 2000 Guineas early market on BETDAQ with Cristoforo Colombo the current favourite.

He did best of the three Aidan O’Brien trio in the Newmarket 2000 Guineas when finishing fifth to Dawn Approach with stablemate Mars just behind running a great race on what was his debut on turf after a Dundalk maiden win.

The story of the race would undoubtedly be a success for Fort Knox who bids to give Johnny Murtagh a dream start to his training career.

The multiple Group One-winning jockey has been assisting Tommy Carmody for the past couple of seasons, with a string for prominent owner Andrew Tinkler at Murtagh’s Curragh yard.

Murtagh has now taken over the reins, but Fort Knox no longer runs in Tinker’s colours as after an impressive win in a Guineas trial at Leopardstown he was bought by Sheikh Mohammed and will run in the famous maroon and white silks at the weekend.

PREVIEW
Shamrock Rovers manager Trevor Croly is expecting a competitive game tonight as his side prepare to face Dundalk in the EA Sports Cup second round.

The Hoops are looking to go one than when they were beaten finalists last year and should be confident of progressing to the quarter-final with a win at Tallaght Stadium. Rovers defeated the Lilywhites in the league when the sides met in May and they’ve also enjoyed thumping 7-0 and 6-0 wins over their rivals in recent seasons.

The hosts will be without Danny Ledwith, Mark Quigley and Pat Sullivan, though, while Derek Foran and Billy Dennehy remain doubtful. Dundalk are missing Chris Shields because of a knee problem, but welcome back Mark Rossiter from injury.

However, Dundalk boss Stephen Kenny has said that he will be rotating his squad with forthcoming fixtures in mind and that suggests this cup isn’t at the top of his list of priorities. Even so, Rovers have won just two of their last ten league games and sit six points behind their rivals in the league table, with Dundalk also having a game in hand.

For that reason the Hoops look too short at around 1..7 on BETDAQ and the best bet looks like backing under 2.5 goals at around the same price on BETDAQ. Each team has only had one game in their last six that featured three goals or more.

RECOMMENDATION: (1-10 points)
Back under 2.5 goals at around 1.76 on BETDAQ: 5 points

Monday: -4.00 points
MAY RETURN TO DATE: -5.91 points

Unfortunately we couldn’t follow-up Saturday’s double and were one goal away from a treble yesterday after Southampton and Stoke drew 1-1.

Back to the racing on Monday for a double on Southwell’s Fibresand card.

MUSIC STOP (3.00) was last of five on debut at Catterick but not beaten that far and should put the experience to use against her three rivals who are all making their debuts.

MATA HARI BLUE (4.30) goes particularly well here and is the only course and distance winner in the field.

7-1 WINNER IS A GENTLEMAN FOR DAQMAN: Gentleman Anshan (WON 7-1) didn’t quite save the day for Daqman on his level-returns staking system yesterday. So today he stakes so that just one winner will cover the day’s expenses.

CAN HE PUT THE NAP TO BED AT REDCAR? Daqman has already landed the French 2,000 Guineas with Style Vendome (WON 9-2). Today he goes for the German equivalent in Cologne with String Theory. His nap is Bedloe’s Island at Redcar.

I shall take a bit of String today. The theory is that the English colts are always good enough to grab a German Guineas, as Caspar Netscher did last year, and we have half the field in Cologne this afternoon.

String Theory is the least exposed and comes from a race which often throws up a host of winners. So far only two from the first four in that race, the Wood Ditton Stakes at the Newmarket Craven Meeting, have been seen again. Both winners.

After the Wood Ditton, String Theory went into my horses-to-follow list, with the following note, penned by yours truly:

Anything String Theory did over the Wood Ditton mile would be a bonus for one bred to get another half mile and by a sire, Medicean, whose progeny improve with time. Marco Botti’s son of a Black Sam Bellamy mare was green at the start and in the race itself but ran on strikingly to be only about a length down at the line.

In fact, String Theory then confirmed just how much speed he has attached to that stamina – and how much improvement there is in him – by winning a mile maiden at Kempton Park with real panache.

He came six lengths clear of his field, putting the race to bed ‘in emphatic style’ (quote unquote Racing Post.com) and in a time faster than the preceding handicap. On the up or what!

String Theory’s trainer, Marco Botti, knows just what’s needed in Cologne, as he turned out the 2011 winner of this German Guineas, Excelebration.

I would be the first to admit that, strictly on what they have done, String Theory may have a lot to find on Excelebration at this stage, since that one had run second to Frankel in the Greenham that Spring.

In fact, Excelebration would place behind Frankel four more times before his nemesis quit the racing arena, leaving him to pick up the Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes (British Champion Mile) at Ascot in October under a new trainer, Aidan O’Brien.

But Excelebration won the Hungerford Stakes and Prix Du Moulin for Botti, and would have been champion in any other year than one in which a Frankel ruled.

Whether String Theory is as good, and whether he’ll follow a similar route, time will tell but, as I said, I saw stamina in his breeding, whereas Excelebration was by a sprinter who got two top milers. Eclipse route, in Theory? (How long is a piece of string).

Other English challengers in the Cologne Guineas today include Ayaar (Mick Channon), winner of Germany’s top juvenile race and fourth in the Free Handicap to Newmarket Guineas seventh, Garswood.

Boomshackerlacker (George Baker) was third in the Maisons Criterium on heavy as a two-year-old and needs the forecast rain. One Word More (Charles Hills) also wants some cut.

The form of his winning return was boosted by the runner-up but only in handicap company and he has to bounce back to the early days when he was second as Toronado broke his maiden (Ayaar third) and then ran up to French 2,000 Guineas winner, Style Vendome, in a Deauville Listed.

Chances of a third soft-ground horse today, Godolphin’s Tawhid, are also dependent on rain. He won the Horris Hill in the mud (Boomshackerlacker third) last backend but, on his reappearance, was more than 14 lengths behind in the firm-ground Craven Stakes won by Toronado.

The San Siro Criterium winner Law Enforcement (Richard Hannon) was exposed as only Listed level at home. Fifth in the UAE Derby, nearly five lengths behind the third, Secret Number, who finished well adrift of Libertarian in the Dante.

What this all means is Nadal now sits at 1.76 with BETDAQ for the French Open that commences in seven short days.

The ever-dependable Rafael Nadal turned in a quite fantastic performance during Sunday’s final in Rome in what was his thirtieth meeting with rival Roger Federer. Many people would have thought the times of Nadal/Federer finals, particularly on a clay court were long gone. However, Federer demonstrated in the Italian capital that on a going week, he still retains the ability and more importantly the consistency to compete in the bigger events on tour. From the start it was evident Nadal wasn’t there for the beating as he raced to a double break lead in the first set. All in all, only 69 minutes separated the first shot from the last as Nadal emerged victorious 6-1 6-3 to become this column’s seventh winning selection of the year. What this all means (at time of writing) is Nadal sits at 1.76 with BETDAQ for the French Open that commences in seven short days, with Djokovic at 3.2, and Rome finalist Roger Federer at 17. Beyond that, it’s effectively 38 (David Ferrer) and bigger the remainder in what looks increasingly like to develop into a two-man tournament.

As mentioned above, just seven short days remain until the year’s second Grand Slam gets underway in Paris so it’s no surprise to see many of the household names absent in this week’s tournaments in Nice and Dusseldorf. Tomas Berdych had stated his intention to participate in France but given his exertions over the last fortnight, he’s taken the right decision to rest up ahead of Roland Garros. That said, we still have six of the world’s top twenty in action across the two events.

ATP Nice

There can’t be many more picturesque locations on the ATP World Tour than the Cote D’Azur and that’s exactly where we’ll start with this week’s preview. Returning in 2010 after a 15-year absence, Nice is one of five events held in France, along with Marseille, Metz, Montpelier and Paris. Unsurprisingly, the home contingent are usually very well supported and so the tournament organisers will be delighted to see the likes of Gilles Simon and Gael Monfils commit to their event. The bottom half of the draw, within which Simon and Monfils find themselves looks considerably tougher than the top half. A strong case could be made for any number of players and looks trappy in the extreme so for that reason, we’ll dodge the bottom sixteen players and switch our attentions to the top half. Oddly, Tomas Berdych’s withdrawal has seen Spain’s Albert Montanes not only take his place in the draw but benefit from his top seeding and subsequently his bye through to the second round. This in itself opens the top half up even more and presents a very good opportunity for a player at slightly bigger odds to make a run through to the latter stages. As mentioned above, the crowd in Nice do love a home favourite to cheer on and Edouard Roger-Vasselin (pictured) could enjoy such an atmosphere. The 29 year-old wildcard finds himself at number 76 in the ATP rankings but has demonstrated an aptitude for the dirt over recent weeks. Aside from bumping into some useful players in David Ferrer, Milos Raonic and Andy Murray, he managed to piece three straight-set wins together in Monte Carlo (two of which were in qualifying), as well as pinching a set off Ferrer in Portugal. Roger-Vasselin lost narrowly to eventual champion Nicolas Almagro here twelve months ago but prior to that defeated compatriot and Rome semi finalist Benoit Paire. Yet to secure his first ATP World Tour title, Roger-Vasselin may not be presented with such an opportunity many times in his career and he will look to go one better than Delray Beach earlier this year. 40 or 50/1 is a price I expect to be available with BETDAQ and I’ll be investing a proportion of last week’s winnings on the Frenchman.

Selection: Edouard Roger-Vasselin

ATP Dusseldorf

The week’s second tournament comes from Dusseldorf in Germany where the tournament top seed is world number 11 Janko Tipsarevic. Formerly the ‘World Team Cup’ and traditionally held the week before Roland Garros, Dusseldorf introduces the inaugural Power Horse Cup and reverts from a team event to an individual one. Frankly speaking, I was never a fan of the old format as I never felt the event had much credibility or indeed bearing on what actually mattered the week after. It goes without saying I’m in favour of the format change.

Until showing some form on the surface, I just can’t have Tipsarevic in a clay court event. He has looked low on confidence on the dirt which defeats to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Daniel Brands show. Tipsarevic looks opposable in almost every match against players who thrive on the surface and I’ll be looking elsewhere for a likely winner.

Juan Monaco is a player who does indeed thrive on the clay and will enjoy the conditions in Germany. A 10-10 won/lost record for 2013 doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in Monaco this week but 2013 started particularly slowly for the Argentine. Over recent weeks though we’ve seen flashes that Monaco mightn’t be a million miles away from a decent run of results. Narrow defeats to big-serving pair John Isner (Houston) and Kevin Anderson (Madrid) aren’t too alarming, nor are defeats to players who are considerably better on a clay court such as Novak Djokovic and Nicolas Almagro. It goes without saying that Monaco won’t be facing that calibre of opposition in Germany. On reflection, a three-set defeat to eventual semi finalist Benoit Paire in Rome perhaps wasn’t all that bad and it could be a ‘tip’ in itself that Monaco has taken a wildcard in Dusseldorf. I’m pretty sure he could’ve accepted a similar position in the Nice draw but Monaco will be all too aware that his chances of victory are enhanced here and at 4/1, is my idea of the winner.

SHAMROCK ON MONDAY: Shamrock heads to this evening’s card at Roscommon which passed an inspection on Sunday. The ground is heavy.

Not a bad run from the nap yesterday, the debutant Acting Talent who finished third at 15/2 in the opener at Navan.

I was impressed with Stubbs in the next race who quickened smartly to land the odds and confirm the promise he showed in the opening two-year-old race of the season, the Tally Ho Stakes.

No surprises we are racing on heavy ground at Roscommon tonight.

Despite the ground, a fine evening is forecast and the course are expecting a decent crowd for their mixed card which gets underway at 6pm.

There are only five runners in the 6.30 yet the BETDAQ market is very tight and compact and ANY of the five could go off favourite come post time.

I have to rule out Connacht Council and Windsor Queen on the ground. Unlike the other three they don’t have proven form on heavy ground which is the key factor here.

Of the remaining trio Frozen North seemed to struggle over this trip last time out at Navan and that would leave the race between Lady Giselle and Janna’s Jingle who ran well when third last time out at Tipperary but I’m unsure the trip and ground will be ideal here.

So we are left, by default, with top weight Lady Giselle who is consistent and although beaten a long way in third at Gowran last time out is worth another chance in this modest contest.
