He now previews the Champions League Final between Barcelona and Juventus

Two of the world’s most historic football clubs will battle it out for the holy grail of club trophies this Saturday evening at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. Both teams are on target to win the ‘treble’ .The road to the final was never easy for either of these teams although I do believe that Juventus had a more difficult route although on paper it seems the opposite.

Road to Berlin….

Upon group qualification Barcelona met Manchester City, PSG and Bayern whilst Juventus got past Dortmund, Monaco and Real Madrid. In my opinion, Manchester City are very average with a manager who is struggling. PSG without Ibrahimovic in the first leg sealed that French club’s fate and finally Bayern Munich who were missing two key players (Robben & Ribery).

Juventus for their part knocked out a struggling (at the time) Borussia Dortmund. Next up were Monaco, some might say knocking out Monaco is nothing to shout about however the principality were one of the best defensive teams in Europe this season. Real Madrid were the Italians next victims and It must be noted that this victory was secured without the very influential Paul Pogba in the first leg and an unfit Pogba in the second leg.

Experience v Excuisitness….

On paper it is easy to understand how FC Barcelona are hot favourites for this final. In Leo Messi ‘Barca’ posses the planet’s best creative player. Neymar and Rakitic are simply gifted and Jordi Alba is an incredible attacking left back. FCB do some have liabilities in Mascherano, Pique and Alves who are all prone to errors and a goalkeeper, Marc Ter-Stegen , who is very inexperienced at this level.

The Italian side will not be lacking in experience with half of this team over the age of thirty. Paul Pogba, just twenty two, has had a dream season and will play a huge part in this final. Andrea Pirlo is a player who has that natural knack of playing even better than their usual outstanding standard in the ‘big’ games. Legendary goalkeeper and captain, Gianluigi Buffon needs no description suffice to say he will have a hugely positive influence on his team’s performance.

Italian belief….

Over this season, Juventus have not been your stereotypical Italian club side sitting deep in defence looking to secure narrow victories. They have taken games to their opponents and clearly with great success. Barcelona as always will maintain high ball retention however they will also have to defend in numbers. Messi can change a game in an instant however so can Pirlo. This season has been fantastic for Barcelona however looking back to the few teams that beat them, PSG (group stage) , Real Madrid and a much weakened Bayern Munich will give the Juventus fans and players (and backers!) great belief that they can be victorious in Berlin.

This game is much tighter than the bookmaker’s odds imply. Barcelona are worthy favourites however not strong favourites. They are not playing an average La Liga side like Athletic Bilbao this Saturday in Berlin. This is Juventus, a team of experience, a team that knows how to win, a team that can win….
