BACK TO DUNDALK: SHAMROCK is back at Dundalk on Friday for his best bet of the night on the eight race card.

A busy night at Dundalk and a decent sized field for the opening maiden at 5.35.

This is very much a marathon maiden – run over the two mile trip.

It certainly looks more competitive than recent renewals. Willie Mullins won it in 2013 with Pique Sous and Aidan O’Brien last year with Shield – both those winners going off at odds-on.

The Jim Bolger trained Sar Oiche is disputing favouritism on BETDAQ but looks horribly exposed to me. She is now seven without a win and I am far from convinced that this dramatic step-up in distance is going to suit. She’s only previously raced over 1m 2f and is not bred to be a stayer.

A far safer conveyance might be Viaduct Joey. There are two ticks in the boxes for him. He has been placed three times in three starts at Dundalk, again over shorter trips, but stamina won’t be a problem for this one who won a Galway hurdle over 2m 5f 190y in heavy ground !!!
