THE IRISH CHALLENGE ON DAY TWO OF AINTREE: SHAMROCK picks out the best of the Irish challenge on the second day of the Grand National meeting at Aintree.

Mixed fortunes on day one.  We got the place on Guitar Pete – only problem was he went and WON the race !! Also the lay of Mossey Joe proved successful.

It’s another great days racing with several strong Irish challengers….

2:00 International Festival For Business 2014 Top Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 2) (4yo+, Class 1, 2m 110y, 10 runners)

On the basis that Vautour is something exceptional then Josses Hill (six length second to him in the Supreme) will take some beating but looks plenty short enough. Dessie Hughes won the opener yesterday and his Art Of Payroll had solid place claims here. He won well at Leopardstown but this of course is a step up in grade.

2:30 Betfred Mobile Mildmay Novices’ Chase (Grade 1) (5yo+, Class 1, 3m 1f, 6 runners)

Irish raiders haven’t enjoyed the best of times in this race over recent seasons and it would be hard to get too confident about Don Cossack whose jumping came under pressure at Cheltenham in the RSA and he fell at the 14th. Gordon Elliott’s Clarcam ran well in the opener and a place is again recommended on Don Cossack.

3:05 Betfred Melling Chase (Grade 1) (5yo+, Class 1, 2m 4f, 11 runners)

This looks wide open (no Sprinter Sacre this year!) and the Irish quartet can all be given some sort of a chance. The benefit of BETDAQ is we can back all four for the same stake and guarantee a profit which is exactly what I will do. The bigger priced Toner D’Oudairies is certainly not out of it.

3:40 Crabbie’s Supporting Everton In The Community Topham Chase (Grade 3 Handicap) (National Course) (5yo+, Class 1, 2m 5f 110y, 30 runners)

Looks tough for the Irish raiders. None really stand out although the James Nash trained Your Busy ran an eyecatcher at Leopardstown last time has place prospects off a feather weight.

4:15 Doom Bar Sefton Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo+, Class 1, 3m 110y, 18 runners)

The Dessie Hughes trained Giantofaman romped home to win a Grade 2 at Thurles last time out and can make a bold bid to land a place in this higher grade.

4:50 Alder Hey Children’s Charity Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3) (4yo+, Class 1, 2m 4f, 22 runners)

5:25 Concerto Group Mares’ Standard Open NH Flat Race (Listed) (4-6yo, Class 1, 2m 1f, 20 runners)
