BRAVE NAP LAY PROJECT COMES OFF: SHAMROCK switched to a NAP LAY for his ONLY bet on Sunday and was rewarded when Air Force Blue trailed home LAST at EVENS in the feature race of the day – the Phoenix Sprint Stakes at the Curragh.

The bravery of taking on Air Force Blue was rewarded yesterday when Aidan O’Brien’s runner trailed home last in the Phoenix Sprint Stakes at the Curragh.

I made the point yesterday that his Group 1 runs had been so poor this season it was hard to summon up much enthusiasm (at the price) about him running at Group 3 level.

It’s sad to see his decline as he really did look extra special last season and it might well be that an early retirement now beckons.

DAQMAN readers would have had good cause to have backed the winner too, as well as laying Air Force Blue. He tipped up the 5/1 winner Toscanini who ran out a comfortable length and a half winner.

They race over jumps at Ballinrobe on Monday and my best bet of the day is Billy De Kid in the maiden hurdle at 7.40pm.

He didn’t show much in bumpers but put in a great run to finish a 25/1 second behind the long odds-on Oathkeeper at Killarney. Allowing for the fact he was probably flattered to finish so close to a talented winner, it was still a good effort and he might be good enough to see off likely favourite Round Tower who has let supporters down at short prices on numerous occasions.
