SIX-UP FOR ELLIOTT: A quiet start to the racing week in Ireland. SHAMROCK reflects on a fantastic day for Gordon Elliott at Navan yesterday.

A quiet week for Irish racing – in fact there’s no more racing until December ! Thurles stage the first meeting of the week on Thursday.

Gordon Elliott was mob-handed at Navan yesterday but the assault proved worthwhile as he left the meeting with a fantastic SIX winners and really setting down a marker for the trainers championship.

Headline act was Empire Of Dirt who was an easy winner of the featured Ladbrokes Troytown Handicap Chase and proved best of the trainers 11 runners in the race.

The 12/1 chance added another big prize to his Cheltenham Festival success earlier in the year and Elliott confirmed after the race that the Grand National might well be on the radar.

He said: “It’s been a lucky race for me and we have won it for the last three years now. It’s the big race at my local track, and to have the first and fourth is brilliant. It was hard to keep an eye on all the horses!

“He came highly recommended from Colm Murphy, and really I’ve only had to keep him sound in his training.

“We’ll look at the Grand National with him now. That will be his long-term aim and he won’t have to do a lot between now and then as he’s high enough (in the ratings).

“He could have a run over hurdles.”
