KILLARNEY NAP: SHAMROCK starts the week at Killarney with a NAP in the feature race on Monday’s card at 7.20pm.

The reader who was ‘aghast’ on why I napped a 1/9 favourite yesterday was right to be – however there was one, rather large, mitigating factor.

Zannda was a non runner AFTER the article was published which caused a complete collapse in the price of Bondi Beach (who was already very short) in the Coolmore Vintage Crop Stakes.

He might well have gone off at 1/9 but it was a throughly unconvincing win for me. He seemed to take an absolute age to wind up and he was far from impressive.

Joseph O’Brien, representing father Aidan said: “When he gets to the front he idles. He settled well and it was a very tactical race. The one in front didn’t go very quick.”

He added: “I don’t know whether he’ll go for the Saval Beg before the Gold Cup or straight to Ascot. You’d be very happy with that.”

I wasn’t.

Hopefully we’ll get back into the world of more sensible prices today (although can never account for later non runners).

Beautiful Killarney stage an eight race card tonight on good ground but sadly the featured Grade 3 An Riocht Chase has cut up to just four runners. The Game Changer was predictably no match for superstar Douvan at the Punchestown Festival but still finished well clear of his rivals in second and should gain a deserved success tonight.

Viconte Du Noyer ran well at Aintree when third in a Grade 3 but The Game Changer looks to have a touch more class.
