WHAT A SMASHER: SHAMROCK landed a winning nap on Sunday with the impressive SMASH WILLIAMS (NAP) WON 6/5 in the Group 3 Round Tower Stakes at the Curragh.

Smash Williams handled the step-up in grade with aplomb yesterday winning the Group 3 Round Tower Stakes at the Curragh in some style.

He was beating a horse (Rockaway Valley) who was previously not disgraced in a Group 1 and Smash Williams looks an incredibly smart prospect. The win yesterday came only eight days after he stormed home by six and a half lengths on his Curragh debut.

The person who might be surprised most by Smash Williams progress is his trainer Jim Bolger as he previously had no fancy entries for the two-year-old and in the space of just over a week he now has a colt on his hands who is unbeaten and a 20/1 chance with Ladbrokes for the QIPCO 2000 Guineas next season.

Bolger said after the race: “I don’t have an alternative as he’s only come on the scene very recently and I’m a slow thinker! I need time to work it out. I’d say seven (furlongs) wouldn’t matter to him and I’d prefer to go six or seven rather than a mile right away, even though he’ll probably get a mile in time. Hopefully he will end up in a Group One before the end of the season. I wasn’t sure if he would handle soft ground so it looks now as if he’ll go on any ground.”

Hard day today – the two cards at Roscommon and Downpatrick look very tricky.

For the nap I’m going with the Dermot Weld trained Sunglider in the opening maiden at Roscommon. He has run well on all three starts – all over this seven furlong trip and should be able to notch up a first success in this company.
