SHAMROCK PLAYS A JACK IN A COOL-HAND YANKEE: Two speculative bets on horses put away and with a chance at the odds of coming right today are added to two short shots to give Shamrock a yankee. Watch for his jack in a cool hand.

It’s the new kid on the block. The twice-run novice chase at Naas on Saturday could be a form key for the Cheltenham and Punchestown festivals.

The race was lost to the weather last year but the most recent winner, Captain Cee Bee, became an Arkle contender and placed in the Champion Chase last year.

The first running was won by Joncol, who was subsequently third for the Punchestown novice title and later won the Punchestown Chase itself.

Saturday’s renewal could see the clash of Bog Warrior and Blackstairmountain, though Bog Warrior is also engaged in another vital novice trial, the Dr J P Moriarty at Leopardstown on Sunday.

Champion-trainer Willie Mullins has the choice of half a dozen in the Moriarty, including four top winners: Bishopsfurze, Call The Police, Soll and Sir Des Champs.

Gordon Elliott blanked out at Ayr yesterday – so I did, too – and I’m punting a pair of English trainers in form today.

Jamie Osborne could hit target firing blanks right now and that’s just what Jericho (2.30 Wolverhampton) would do, if he ever got near the stable mare.

But for betting purposes Jericho’s gelding op could mean that he is transformed, as might the change of stables for Emirates Jack (4.15 Southwell), now with a yard – David Simcock’s – that’s had seven of its last eight runners placed, four of them winners.

Both Jericho and Emirates Jack haven’t been seen for a while and their odds will be all the better for that. I’ll put these relative long-shots with two favourites and see if I can’t get my yankee back on track.

Derivatives (3.15 Southwell) and Cool Hand Luke (3.30 Wolverhampton) should act as reliable bankers.
