GALWAY DAY TWO: Dermot Weld started the meeting as he left off last year with three winners on the opening day. He has several good chances today including debutant Big Break in the 6.10 race.
How foolish was I to oppose Mr Weld on Monday? The run of winning naps came to a abrupt end when Line Drummer frankly proved a bitter disappointment and Dermot Weld’s Thunder Mountain showed huge improvement from his debut run at the Curragh – which was always a strong possibility in a race in which he has excelled over the years.
It didn’t all go the way of Weld though – he struck with an early treble but the shortest price runner from the stable was comprehensively beaten in the bumper.
On day two, Weld saddles debutant Big Break in the 6.10. She looks a fascinating recruit, being a sister to Famous Name, from the same stable and she is trading just south of evens on BETDAQ, suggesting she could easily make a winning debut.
The meeting starts with a competitive novices hurdle at 4.00 where the Willie Mullins trained Zuzka can go close as she steps up in class after winning a poor contest at Sligo last time out.
I think the best bet on the day two card is Mona Brown in the 7.10. She has just had the two starts, finishing second on both occasions to useful sorts and I prefer her to the Dermot Weld trained favourite Storm Lightning, who he relies upon to give him a fifth successive win in the race.
It should be a case of ‘once bitten twice shy’ after yesterday – but we’ll see if we can get a Weld-trained horse beat today !
