2000 GUINEAS DAY AT THE CURRAGH: SHAMROCK previews the three Group races on the 2000 Guineas day card at the Curragh.

The nap, Jacobean, was a non runner yesterday.

Three Group races on the 2000 Guineas day card at the Curragh today where the going is good to yielding.

2:45 Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes (Group 2) (4yo+, Class 1, 6f, 9 runners)

Eddie Lynam won this with Slade Power last year and he relies this year on Sole Power who is a super tough sprinter back from a winning trip to Dubai. Sole Power won the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot last season impressively but the key issue with him his clearly the 6f trip which he has yet to win over – although has gone close over. Mustajeeb is going the other way and dropping down in distance although was fit enough to win on seasonal debut last season. Gordon Lord Byron is a tentative pick. The global traveller didn’t sparkle last time in Sha Tin but can do better back on home soil.

3:20 Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas (Group 1) (3yo, Class 1, 1m, 11 runners)

Only John Gosden and Richard Hannon have prevented Aidan O’Brien winning this for seven straight years and in Gleneages he is long odds on to do it again. It was impossible not to be taken by his thoroughly professional job in the English equivalent at Newmarket – the race in which O’Brien had 1st and last – the bubble of Ol’Man River being well and truly sunk. Ivawood has three lengths to find if Richard Hannon is going to plunder this prize again. I thought Endless Drama was interesting in the BETDAQ place market. He impressed on debut at Naas and the ground may well have been too soft for him in subsequent starts when runner-up at Leopardstown and here at the Curragh. He looks capable of further improvement and at around 3.7 worthy of place interest.

3:55 Lanwades Stud Stakes (Fillies Group 2) (4yo+, Class 1, 1m, 9 runners)

Dermot Weld won this in successive years with Emulous and looks to have an outstanding chance of landing it again this year with the unbeaten Brooch. I have been looking forward to seeing her again after her three wins from three last season which culminated in a Group 3 success at the Curragh. Further improvement is needed but also surely likely?

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Brooch (3.55 Curragh)
NEXT BEST: Gordon Lord Byron (2.45 Curragh)
PLACE: Endless Drama (3.20 Curragh)
