WINNING NAP FROM SHAMROCK’S ONLY BET: Nichols Canyon (NAP, WON 4/5) made all the running to win the Tattersalls Ireland Champion Novice Hurdle at Punchestown yesterday.

Great days racing on Saturday on both sides of the Irish Sea.

Two Grade 1 races at Punchestown and the 2000 Guineas for flat fans at Newmarket.

3:45 Qipco 2000 Guineas Stakes (The 207th Running) (British Champions Series) (Group 1) (3yo, Class 1, 1m, 18 runners)

Aidan O’Brien has a strong duo in the first English Classic of the season with Gleneages (Ryan Moore) and Ol’ Man River (Joseph O’Brien).

After finishing fourth on debut at Leopardstown, Gleneagles went on to win his next four races including, in sequence, a Group 3, Group 2 and the Group 1 Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes at the Curragh. He went on to ‘win’ the Group 1 Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp but was disqualified in the stewards room. He has always looked as though the step up in distance will help further.

Ol’ Man River is harder to assess. He won both his two-year-old starts which were both over today’s mile trip at the Curragh. He won the Group 2 Juddmonte Beresford Stakes in the style of a very good horse and at the respective prices on BETDAQ has to be the pick here.

3:50 Punchestown: Irish Stallion Farms E.B.F. Mares Champion Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo+, Class 1, 2m 2f, 7 runners)

As spectacular a Cheltenham Festival as Mullins and Walsh had they will forever think that Annie Power was the one that got away after her dramatic fall at final hurdle with the Mares Hurdle in the bag. Compensation looks a formality here.

4:25 Punchestown: AES Champion Four Year Old Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo, Class 1, 2m, 11 runners)

Qualando looks a very strong English raider here for Paul Nicholls. He was the surprise 25/1 winner of the Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and fully deserves a crack at this Grade 1.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Ol’ Man River (3.45 Newmarket)
NEXT BEST: Qualando (4.25 Punchestown)
