JUST ONE CANALETTO: Would do very nicely for SHAMROCK on Derby Day at Epsom. However, he is still reeling from an unlucky run from his 14/1 NAP Diamondsandrubies in the Oaks on Friday.
A big hard luck story from the Oaks I’m afraid.
My NAP was the 14/1 chance Diamondsandrubies who suffered terrible interference and did well in the circumstances to rally for fourth. But for the interference who knows he could easily have won the race. Unfortunately, Epsom is a course that brings a myriad of similar heartbreak stories and the Oaks was a particularly rough race yesterday. Well done though to Aidan O’Brien but I am afraid 50/1 chance Qualify wasn’t anywhere on my radar 🙁
There’s a big Irish raid on the Derby this afternoon with five of the 12 colts trained in Ireland. The going has caught everyone out this week with the thundery showers failing to materialise to any significance and it’s likely that we will have genuinely fast ground come 4.30pm this afternoon. Many will argue that’s exactly how ground should be in June and Andrew Cooper, clerk of the course, has been reluctant to water and interfere with nature.
The Dante trial is probably the most significant trial of all and the winner of that this year Golden Horn is a worthy favourite. There is a slight stamina doubt over him which layers will cling on to as their main hope of getting him beaten for the first time in his career.
Ryan Moore went within a whisker of landing the Oaks yesterday and in Giovanni Canaletto he has the chance to go one better.
Aidan O’Brien bids for a fourth consecutive winner of the race and Giovanni Canaletto could well be up to it. He stayed on well in the closing stages of the Gallinule Stakes at the Curragh on his seasonal reappearance and certainly has the pedigree of a potential Derby winner being a brother of the 2013 winner Ruler Of The World.
He has come in for a mountain of support this week and can justify the confidence on the Epsom Downs.
