HURRICANE FLY: What’s left to be said? He has just the three rivals to beat in this afternoon’s BHP Insurance Irish Champion Hurdle as he bids to win the prize for a fourth time and clashes horns with Jezki again.

Champion Hurdle day at Leopardstown today and all eyes will of course be on Hurricane Fly in his bid for a fourth win in the race.

To add further intrigue, it emerged on Friday that the brilliant 10-year-old had worked badly by his standards during the week, with a bruised foot emerging as the reason.

The 18-times Grade One winner is reportedly back on track, but the scare, combined with big performances expected from Jezki and Our Conor, has Mullins apprehensive as Hurricane Fly looks to emulate Istabraq with four victories.

He said: “He put in a middling bit of work the other day, which he has never done before.

“We couldn’t find anything wrong with him for a good while afterwards, but the girl that looks after him noticed he seemed to be feeling a leg and we discovered a little bruise.

“We took off the shoe, cleaned it and put it in a poultice overnight.

“It’s a concern, although he appears to be in good form now.

“It’s going to be a hell of a test for him.”

If you fancy Jezki, it has to be on the belief that he can find 2 1/2 lengths on Hurricane Fly – because that’s the margin he was beaten by Hurricane Fly in the Ryanair Hurdle over course and distance at the end of December.

There are reasons for thinking that might happen. Jezki got boxed in at a crucial stage and he entitled to get closer today but for me it’s a race to watch and savour.

For the nap I’m sticking with the progressive Wounded Warrior in the Synergy Security Solutions Novice Hurdle (Grade 2) at 3.10. He made a pleasing winning debut over hurdles at Navan and he also won a bumper well at the track. At around 5.5 on BETDAQ he looks a value NAP on Champion Hurdle day.
