GROUP 1 ACTION AT THE CURRAGH: SHAMROCK previews the two Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh this afternoon.

Group 1 action on the Curragh card on Sunday.

3:35 Keeneland Phoenix Stakes (Group 1) (2yo, Class 1, 6f, 8 runners)

The starting point has to be Aidan O’Brien, given he has won the race for the past three seasons, last season with Caravaggio, and has four of the eight runners today.

The pick of his quartet looks to be the Ryan Moore ridden Sioux Nation who gave the trainer/jockey combination a rare winner at double figure odds when winning the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot and holds Frozen Angel on that form. That was over five furlongs and he was previously well beaten over course and distance in the Listed Marble Hill Stakes when the going was yielding to soft. He is undoubtedly a better horse on quicker ground, as it is today.

He faces an interesting rival in Beckford, trained by Gordon Elliott. He has won both his starts to date, both coming over course and distance and proved he was up to winning in good company when landing the Group 2 Railway Stakes last time out. Further improvement seems likely and he can halt the O’Brien monopoly.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Beckford (3.35 Curragh)
