….AND THEY’RE OFF: SHAMROCK heads to the Curragh for the opening day of the 2014 Flat season. His nap runs in the first Group race of the season, the Lodge Park Stud Express Stakes for fillies, a Group 3 at 3.40.

The Flat is back – and so is Jim Bolger in the opening Tally Ho Stud Maiden – a race he has won for the last three years, notably of course with Dawn Approach in 2012.

He sets punters the first quandary of the season by saddling two in the opener. Jockey bookings and the market suggest that Alertness will be able to live up to her name in the first two-year-old race of the season.

Initial probably gets the nod solely on pedigree. He is by Invincible Spirit out of a Group 1 winner over 7f in Argentina. But at this stage of the season it’s so much more about how much forward they are and we know from history that Bolger usually makes a flying start to the campaign.

The 2.40 looks totally impossible. The Elusive Pimpernel Maiden in which the winner is the only thing that looks elusive. 20 runners including several interesting newcomers…. bring back the jumps !! My angle in here is to place lay the front two at the betting, Aerialist and Rousayan, but only if you can lay them both at odds-on. I can’t see them both being placed and one placed would deliver a profit.

The first Group race of the season is the Lodge Park Stud Express Stakes for fillies, a Group 3 at 3.40.

I’m going to take a chance here with Vote Often who was impressive in her second start of last season, staying on strongly to win her maiden at Naas by over four lengths. With her fillies allowance here and liking for soft ground she can see off some more experienced rivals.
