PIPPED A NOSE: SHAMROCK’S NAP was beaten a nose by a 33/1 shot yesterday. He heads to Leopardstown on Sunday for the two Classic trials at 3.10 and 3.45.

The Navan nap, Emperor Of Exmoor traded desperately short in running on BETDAQ but was pipped on the line.

Pleasing to see the two Classic trials at Leopardstown being well contested, numerically at least.

3:10 Leopardstown 2,000 Guineas Trial Stakes (Listed) (3yo, Class 1, 1m, 10 runners)

This race hasn’t been the best trial in recent years but it looks an interesting renewal. Go For Goal enjoys a big fitness advantage over his rivals having finished second in a handicap on the opening day of the season at the Curragh last weekend but it would be disappointing if that form proved good enough to land this.

It’s early days of course but Aidan O’Brien hardly started the new season with a bang last weekend and for this reason my enthusiasm on his Indian Maharaja (better fancied of his two) is tempered. Indian Maharaja is unbeaten in two starts – winning a Tipperary Listed race in good style last time out at long odds on.

My preference is for the John Oxx trained Ebanoran who won a 14 runner maiden on debut at the Curragh in his only start of last season.

He has entries in both the English Guineas and Derby,

3:45 Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial Stakes (Group 3) (3yo, Class 1, 7f, 9 runners)

It was hard not to be taken by the performance of Balansiya here at Leopardstown last season. She was hugely impressive when beating Upper Silesian by seven lengths and the Dermot Weld trained filly can take the step-up in class in her stride.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Balansiya (3.45 Leopardstown)
NEXT BEST: Ebanoran (3.10 Leopardstown)
