THYESTES DAY AT GOWRAN PARK: SHAMROCK looks at four races on today’s card including the Thyestes Chase at 3.10 and the Galmoy Hurdle at 2.00. The ground is heavy.

12:55 Ladbrokes Hurdle (4yo, 2m, 3 runners)

Just about impossible to see how Willie Mullins won’t win this for the fourth consecutive season. Footpad is as short as 1.09 on BETDAQ to beat his two rivals of which only Jazz Ranger looks even remotely dangerous. Footpad made all to win over course and distance in November and was subsequently third in a Grade 2 at Leopardstown. The form looks easily good enough.

1:25 Langton House Hotel Maiden Hurdle (5yo+, 2m, 20 runners)

Tamlough Boy might be worth a small bet to take on another Mullins hotpot with. Noel Meade’s runner had a tough race to win a bumper on debut at Punchestown but it came on the same heavy ground as today. The favourite is Au Quart De Tour who has let backers down at short odds on a couple of occasions. That said, he looked to have the race in the bag before falling at the last at Fairyhouse last time – although that was over the 2m 4f trip.

2:00 John Mulhern Galmoy Hurdle (Grade 2) (5yo+, Class 1, 3m, 5 runners)

Just five runners for the first Graded race on today’s card but it looks competitive. Alpha Des Obeaux thoroughly deserves a win after a string of seconds. He holds Martello Tower on Grade 1 Leopardstown form over Christmas and I expect that form to be confirmed today. At Fishers Cross may need the outing after a break of 315 days and the Willie Mullins trained Briar Hill is also returning after a break but his jumping remains a concern.

3:10 Goffs Thyestes Handicap Chase (Grade A) (5yo+, 3m 1f, 19 runners)

Looks as competitive as ever with Willie Mullins saddling a quartet of runners in the search of a fourth win in the race. Mullins has won the last two renewals – last year with Djakadam who is now favourite for the Cheltenham Gold Cup. I’m sweet on the win and place chances of the Michael Hourigan trained The Job Is Right. I’m sure he has a big race in him as he proved when finishing fifth in the big chase at Leopardstown over Christmas and also didn’t run badly over hurdles at Punchestown when fourth earlier this month.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
