IRISH RACING BACK AT CORK: SHAMROCK heads to Cork for his best bet of the day on Thursday in the opening maiden hurdle at 3.00.

Irish racing resumes this afternoon at Cork and the best bet on the card could well be Crystal Pearl in the opener at 3.00.

A winner on the flat over six furlongs when trained by Mark Tompkins she has made a promising start after the transition to hurdles. She ran particularly well when runner-up to Golan Road in a Leopardstown maiden hurdle in January.

She was beaten a long way on fourth last time out at Navan but the ground may well have been too testing that day.

The hope today is that her experience will prove enough to see off some interesting rivals including debutant Sizing Killarney for Henry de Bromhead who is a half-brother to winning hurdler Another Rebel.

Ruby Walsh’s mount Alpina was a well beaten third of six on her hurdling debut at Limerick but arguably ran better than her 40/1 price tag indicated and can only improve.

NAP: Crystal Pearl (3.00 Cork)
