SHAMROCK LOOKS AHEAD TO THE ST LEGER: It’s a big day for Irish trained runners on Saturday in the St Leger at Doncaster. On a blank day of racing in Ireland, SHAMROCK looks at the Irish challenge in the final classic of the UK season.

Unfortunately the nap yesterday, Donatis Comet, was second -having traded short in running and looking the likely winner jumping the final flight.

Not a bad week so far though with two winning naps and a second.

There’s no racing in Ireland today – my selections will resume at Down Royal tomorrow.

On Saturday it’s the St Leger at Doncaster which sees a strong Irish challenge and – judged by the BETDAQ market – a wide open renewal.

Disputing favouritism is the David Wachman-trained Excess Knowledge will be trying to make it third-time lucky after taking third spot behind Ruler Of The World at Epsom, and was second to Trading Leather at the Curragh.

Joseph O’Brien rides Queen’s Vase winner Leading Light for his father, Aidan, with Ryan Moore jocked up on stablemate Foundry.

The Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot is over two miles so there are no stamina doubts about Leading Light who has won all four of his starts since finishing well beaten on his Galway debut.

Crucially he has winning form on yielding (soft in places) ground at Navan – and with the ground at Doncaster expected to be good to soft at best there will be no issues from that.

He looks incredibly progressive and is a solid bet for me at this stage – despite the step-up in class.

St Leger selections to be confirmed on Saturday.
