AIDAN FOR A ROYAL ASCOT FLYER: SHAMROCK looks ahead to the opening day of Royal Ascot 2017 with Churchill set to give Aidan O’Brien a flyer.

It’s his own tough act to follow.

Aidan O’Brien tries to better his own record of excellence at Royal Ascot this year with the bar set at seven – the number of winners he notched up twelve months ago which was part of a record breaking 10 Irish trained winners at the Royal extravaganza.

Jarlath Fahey, Michael Halford and Gordon Elliott also got on the scoresheet last year and there are some serious Irish challengers this year not least of which Churchill, the banker for many, in the St James’s Palace Stakes today at 4.20pm.

The going is officially good to firm (good in places) but I think those places will become very few as it’s a scorching summers day with the ground likely to ride fast.

Churchill is now unbeaten in seven runs, including of course both the Newmarket and Curragh 2000 Guineas. It was good to firm at Newmarket where he beat Barney Roy a length and the pair renew rivalry here.

The two dominate the BETDAQ market and I can’t really see past Churchill but he is tight at 1.61. He never wins particularly easily so you could chance your arm by asking for evens in running which I think is a strong possibility with layers getting brave and possibly over-reacting. He’s my day one nap.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Churchill (4.20 Royal Ascot)
