Man United v Southampton

4.30pm Sunday
The first silverware of the season is up for grabs and while most years this would not be considered the trophy clubs care about I think there will be a real competitive edge to this one. Neither side will care about the fact it is the EFL Cup, a trophy for them will mean a lot. For Southampton of course it is not every year they such a chance at winning silverware, and for Man United it is a chance lift their first trophy under Jose Mourinho.

Although it would be great to see Southampton lifting a trophy I just don’t fancy them against this Man United side on Sunday. Southampton have lost their two centre backs from the start of the season, and that partnership really held things together for this side. They were the best partnership in the league in my opinion and without them in place I think they will struggle defensively for the rest of the season even with the system they have in place. Man United have been in excellent form in all competitions over the past few month, with their loss to Hull City in the second leg of the EFL Cup semi final being their only loss in their last 20 games.

Mourinho is a champion. He has shown that throughout his career. He gets teams trophies, and for him it does not matter what competition it is right now, he can get his first trophy at Old Trafford which will automatically make his first season a success. If they make the Champions League then of course it will go down as an excellent season, then giving him another window to strengthen his team. It has been a great run for Southampton in the EFL Cup, beating all Premier League sides on their way to the final (without even conceding a goal) but I think they will fall just short in Wembley. I’m going for United in 90 minutes.
