EURO 2016 THURSDAY: Three matches on Thursday. At 2pm it’s ENGLAND v WALES playing each other for the first time in a major tournament. At 5pm UKRAINE v NORTHERN IRELAND and at 8pm the World Champions GERMANY v POLAND. We preview each game.

England v Wales

2pm This will be the first time that England and Wales have met at a major tournament, indeed the only other time England faced another country from the United Kingdom was when they beat Scotland 2-0 in Euro 1996. Much of the English press were quite negative after their opening game with Russia, mainly just focusing on the result – while the European press were way more positive because of their style of play. They played Russia off the park in the first half and could have easily been 2-0 up by half time.

With that in mind they should really have too much class for Wales, who haven’t beaten England since 1984, losing six and drawing one since then. Obviously Bale will be the main threat to England but they should out-score Wales if they play like they did against Russia.

BETDAQ best bet:
England to beat Wales at 1.55.

Football-Wales

Some England v Wales facts:

  • This is England Wales’ first meeting at a major tournament.
  • Wales have lost six of the last eight meetings with England.
  • Wales have conceded at least once in their last five games.
  • Vardy has scored three in his last four England games.

Ukraine v Northern Ireland

5pm Northern Ireland face a tough game here against a Ukraine side that have lost just three games in their last 18 (friendlies included) and can count victories against reigning European Champions Spain and World Champions Germany in that list too. They did however lose their first game of this tournament to Germany the other night, but they should be able to handle this Northern Ireland side who failed to have a shot on target against Poland – Ukraine are currently priced up at around 1.6 mark and while that does look like a bet, under 2.5 goals might be even better value at around 1.66.

You’d expected Northern Ireland to be quite negative and it could easily take Ukraine a while to break them down – it took Poland until the second half so we could see the same again here. Northern Ireland have only managed one goal in their four meetings with Ukraine, but have managed two draws over the last two matches, both games goalless. We expect another low scorer here.

BETDAQ best bet:
Under 2.5 goals at 1.66.

Football-NorthernIreland

Some Ukraine v Northern Ireland facts:

  • Northern Ireland have never beaten Ukraine.
  • This is the first time that the side have met at a major tournament.
  • Over 50% of Northern Ireland’s goals in Euro 2016 qualifying came from set pieces.

Germany v Poland

8pm Poland won’t be looking forward to this game as they have a dreadful record against the World Champions. They’ve managed only one win in the last 20 meetings, failed to score eight times in the last 12, and have never beaten Germany in a major tournament. They can take some hope from their most recent meetings though, with Germany winning only one from the last four, two draws included.

Germany are currently priced at around the 1.6 mark to win which seems like a shade of value, however we feel that the best value is in the goals market here. Under 2.5 goals is currently trading 2.1 and we think that it should be odds on here – Germany have been pretty solid at the back, added to Poland’s goal scoring record against them, and we think that the Germans should win 1-0 or 2-0 here, and the 2.1 for under 2.5 goals appeals a lot more than the 1.6 on Germany.

BETDAQ best bet:
Under 2.5 goals at 2.1.

Football-Germany

Some Germany v Poland facts:

  • Poland have only won once in the last 20 meetings with Germany.
  • Poland have never scored more than one goal in a game at the European Championships.
  • Germany have kept eight clean sheets in the last 12 meetings with Poland.
  • Germany have failed to score just once in their last 13 European Championship games.
