FINAL ROUND OF GROUP STAGES: Wales and England have both progressed to the last 16, one team more convincingly than the other. Over the next couple of days we will see if the two teams from the Island of Ireland can join them, both have huge tasks in hand. Looking at the games over the next couple of days, I have picked out my best bets:

COMING TO AN END
It pains me to say it, but it seems like Ireland’s campaign will be coming to a close on Wednesday night. It started positively with a draw (that could have so easily been a win) against the Swedes, the game against Belgium was a big disappointment as they were simply outclassed in the second half. Once they conceded first, it was curtains.

Now Ireland go to Lille to take on the Italians, who for me have been one of the better sides at this stage in the tournament. They will be resting players, but even at this I don’t like Ireland’s chances. The problem with a side like Italy resting players is they have a squad of guys who are genuinely fighting for positions. In this team there is no clear cut superstar right now, but a lot of very good quality players. So when guys are coming in to the game against Ireland, they are playing to start in their last 16 tie.

It is tough to see how Ireland will approach this game tactically. Watching them against Belgium was frustrating, especially as a former attacking player. They just didn’t show anything in terms of attacking. Long was consistently isolated, and receiving service he could do absolutely nothing with. I think they have to play a second up front, so your choices are Robbie Keane or Daryl Murphy. For me it has to be Murphy, unfortunately Keane just does not look fit right now. If Murphy can create a chance or two for Shane Long they can grab a goal, but I can’t see them having enough to win the game. Verdict – Back Italy at 2.44
