CRICKET WORLD CUP: BETDAQ’s Gerard Browne previews Bangladesh v New Zealand on Wednesday in CWC 2019.

Bangladesh v New Zealand

Both of these sides have had a dream start to the tournament. Bangladesh caused a mini shock by defeating South Africa whilst New Zealand had a very comfortable 10 wicket win over Sri Lanka. The Oval is the venue for this one and it is the second Day/Night game of this World Cup. Despite their excellent result vs South Africa, Bangladesh are big outsiders for this matchup on the exchange at 3.5. Favourites New Zealand are priced at 1.33.

Bangladesh gave a batting exhibition on Sunday. Their score of 330 runs is the third highest score of the tournament so far. When they found themselves 75-2 after 11.4 overs, such a score seemed unlikely. But they had moved onto 217 before they loss of their 3rd wicket. It’s actually hard to believe no player scored a century. Mushfiqur Raham (78) and Shakib Al Hasan (75) were fantastic with the bat, with Mustafizur Rahman also in good form claiming 3-67.

New Zealand meanwhile were expected to beat Sri Lanka but even they must have been surprised how easy it was. Sri Lanka were all bowled out for 136 after just 29.2 overs. Matthew James Henry and Lachlan Hammond Ferguson both claimed three wickets each along the way. New Zealand were always going to chase down that target but to do so without losing any wicket and inside 17 overs was extremely impressive. From a neutral’s point of view it was disappointing we didn’t get to see Ross Taylor in action, but credit must be given to Martin Guptill and Colin Munro for their performances.

The most recent encounter between these sides was back in February. New Zealand won that series 3-0, which may explain their short price on the exchange. I feel Bangladesh’s price isn’t a fair reflection of their chances of winning this game. This game should be a close affair and I won’t be overly surprised if Bangladesh do win, but I can’t see New Zealand bowlers allowing Bangladesh to build up a big score like South Africa did.

Verdict: NEW ZEALAND
