WON (3rd 16-1) ZHUI FENG

TODAY: CURRAGH LAUNCH WITH ABC GUIDE TO THE IRISH 2,000: Today’s features are an ABC stats guide to the Irish 2,000 Guineas plus the opening bets for the Curragh meeting which stages the Classic tomorrow. The final colts Epsom Derby trial is at Goodwood at 3.30.

THE MAKINGS OF A MAGNA GUINEAS

3.35 The Curragh, tomorrow (IRISH 2,000 GUINEAS)

ABC KEY

A Ran in the last three weeks (100%)
B Ran at Newmarket on the last day (82%)
C Won over 7f or 1m (82%)
D Trained Aidan O’Brien (60%)
G Prefers good ground/ S Prefers soft
X Trainer in form

ABCDGX Magna Grecia

Winner of the Futurity (ex-Racing Post Trophy) in October, after narrow defeat by recent French Guineas winner, Persian King; then himself went on to strong Guineas success at Newmarket (Skardu third).

ABCGX Skardu

Somewhat lucky Craven Stakes winner (narrow second hampered and bumped) and form has not held up. But Skardu himself stepped up to finish third in the Newmarket Guineas, first colt home of the low numbers.

ABG Emaraaty Ana

Gimcrack winner, fifth in the Middle Park, but last but one on reappearance in Newmarket Guineas.

ACDGX Mohawk

Won the Royal Lodge Stakes (1m) as a juvenile but two weeks later flopped at big odds behind Too Darn Hot in the Futurity. No match for Circus Maximus on soft in Dee Stakes on reappearance.

ACGX Shelir

Unraced as a two-year-old, seemingly established himself as a useful performer when winning back to back this Spring but success in Tetrarch Stakes is suspect, with the favourite underperforming and the placed horses of little account.

ACGX Too Darn Hot

Ready winner of Champagne Stakes and Dewhurst was outgunned in the Dante on his return over further, pair coming clear, and drop back to a mile will suit.

ACG Guaranteed

Returned to the rating of his Group-3 form (winner and second) of last October at Leopardstown, after defeats there in the Ballysax and the Derrinstown Derby Trial this Spring.

AC I Am Superman

Simple task to complete handicap double in April but eased down fifth of eight as favourite for the Tetrarch Stakes after.

ADGX Van Beethoven

Won top juvenile trial, Railway Stakes (6f), last June. Not placed in six key races since, including behind Too Darn Hot in Champagne Stakes

CDX Old Glory

Son of Frankel, third in a Group 3 as a two-year-old. Not seen since, and one of likely Ballydoyle pacesetters.

CGX Decrypt

Travelled superbly to quicken clear in 7f race at Cork in April. Beat nothing well and takes a leap in the dark but seems likely sort to improve again.

CG Phoenix Of Spain

Claims high rank on basis of seconds as a juvenile to Too Darn Hot (Champagne Stakes) and Magna Grecia (by a head in the Futurity Trophy). Not seen since.

CG Hillwalker

Australian sprint sire; stamina and Guineas success down the dam’s line. Winner at Gowran Park last June.

DX Globe Theatre

Out of Oaks winner Was (Galileo), half-sister to New Approach. Not much to show from three outings and likely pacemaker.

GOSDEN ACE COMES OUT OF THE HAT

2.20 Goodwood Charles Hills is absolutely flying and Wufud, a Dubawi half-brother to his champion-sprinter Muhaarar, could uphold the family prowess now that he’s had a wind op.

Hills’ current form is 110312311, going for a hat-trick today, starting with Wufud (8.4 on BETDAQ) but offering a stakes saver at a shorter price – around evens – with Qutob (9.00) at Pontefract tonight.

3.30 Goodwood (Cocked Hat Stakes) I couldn’t get involved in yesterday’s Height Of Fashion fillies’ trial and the colts’ Derby test today is not much easier, with John Gosden saddling two.

John Gosden has taken four Cocked Hats in nine seasons, his best winner being Masked Marvel (2011), who went on to capture the St Leger at Doncaster.

We assume that Private Secretary was Frankie Dettori’s pick, based on their drawing clear at Sandown in April.

Along with Alfaatik, Duckett’s Grove, Kaloor, Persian Moon, he is engaged in the ‘Ascot Derby’, the King Edward V11 Stakes. It would require an eased down multi-length victory here for the Epsom Derby still to be considered.

3.55 Haydock It’s in the air that either the John Gosden trained Byzantia, a daughter of Golden Horn, or Godolphin’s 650,000-guinea buy, Sacred Dance, will take the George Formby Birthday Stakes, but Byzantia was very easy to back at 4.2 this morning, with Sacred Dance a hot-pot.

So I thought it might let in a place bet concerning Danny Tudhope and Michael Bell, who are 100% (2-2) together. Zmile is a 10.0 BETDAQ win offer to maintain Bell’s current toll of 121111100103.

26 O’BRIEN WINNERS IN TWO RACES

5.25 The Curragh (Marble Hill Stakes) Coventry Stakes winner Caravaggio (2015), and Lowther and Cheveley Park winner, Fairyland (2018), have recently surged from this race, as champion two-year-olds.

They were among 11 Marble Hill winners for Aidan O’Brien, who saddles three of the five runners today, wanting to make sure of number 12 to launch the Guineas meeting.

Harpocrates wasn’t punished when Siskin took control at Naas, running green and racing in the rear most of the way. We might see different tactics today from the son of a stayer related down the dam’s side to Camelot.

The step up to 6f should suit King Neptune on the evidence of his Listed second on this course over the minimum. Back To Brussels, who has Royal Ascot on the agenda, gets 5lb as the filly in the field.

7.05 The Curragh (Gallinule Stakes) Three more runners from Aidan O’Brien, who this time tries for win number SIXTEEN in the race! That’s 26 wins to date in tonight’s two feature races!

However, his Gallinule winners have not amounted to much, with the exception of one or two, notably Leading Light (2013), who would win the Queens Vase, Doncaster St Leger and Ascot Gold Cup, to name but a few, as they say!

O’Brien has already slammed Bold Approach via Anthony Van Dyck, and there has been no bold approach to 2019 (not seen for 302 days).

Success for USS Michigan, four or five lengths off the winner, Shelir, in the Tetrarch Stakes, would boost that one’s chance in tomorrow’s 2,000 Guineas.

And Ballydoyle’s selected here easily disposes of today’s favourite, Tinandali, whose Leopardstown maiden runner-up, Grandmaster Flash, was more than five lengths behind O’Brien’s Il Paradiso recently.

So it is that I reckon Constantinople a good thing here at 2.68 BETDAQ offers this morning. Hampered at Cork before rapid late headway, pipped a short-head
