IS THERE STILL HONEY FOR TEA?

⭕ 3.15 Leopardstown, tomorrow (Irish Champion Hurdle) STATS: Nine favourites out of 10 have won. Willie Mullins scored six in a row (2011-16). In ratings order when all raised to 12st (in parentheses):

159 (168) HONEYSUCKLE Won half a length last year in mare’s receipt of 7lb, with previous winners behind: one-length third Petit Mouchoir (2017) and fourth Supasundae (2018).

The runner-up, Darver Star, has gone chasing since and those two previous winners have failed in a total of eight subsequent races.

But Honeysuckle went on to win the Mares Hurdle at Cheltenham last March and the Hattons Grace in November (Supasundae tailed off).

164 (166) SHARJAH Eleven lengths behind Honeysuckle in this race a year ago but only three lengths off Epatante, second, in the Champion Hurdle.

Comfortable winner of Grade 1 here at Leopardstown after Christmas, with Petit Mouchoir five-lengths third, Saint Roi fourth, Abacadabras fifth (scoped badly after).

159 (161) SALDIER The Punchestown Champion Four-Year-Old of 2018; injured later in the year and difficult to assess.

Burst back on to the scene on same course in November 2019 by beating Petit Mouchoir in the Morgiana (Sharjah fourth). But well behind Sharjah on his return here after a year off.

158 (160) ABACADABRAS The 2020 Supreme Novice second to Shishkin, was another well behind Sharjah in that Grade 1 at Leopardstown just after Christmas (first-time tongue-tie), following neck defeat of odds-on Saint Roi in the Morgiana at Punchestown in November.

157 (159) PETIT MOUCHOIR The 2017 winner of this and Cheltenham Champion Hurdle third six weeks later, but beaten in 17 races (chase and hurdle) since scoring over fences in the October.

Third to Honeysuckle for the Irish championship on this day last year. Beaten twice by Sharjah, either side of that.

157 (159) SAINT ROI Owned J P McManus and third Willie Mullins runner alongside Sharjah and Saldier. County Hurdle winner at Cheltenham in March, beaten a neck by Abacadabras and almost six lengths by Sharjah raised to Grade 1 in races either side of Christmas.

UNI-MOORE MAGIC AT LINGFIELD

⭕ 1.40 Lingfield Ryan Moore is back today on a father-and-son job horse, in fact a hidden horse, Royaume Uni; hidden because his published form figures are for the Flat in France, where he won for Andre Fabre.

Since then, he’s tried high-class hurdles here for Gary Moore and, on the last day, dropped to a 2m class-4 NH Flat race and scooted round today’s Lingfield track, winning impressively.

Social City paid for a four-timer under Cieren Fallon when hiked a total of 22lb and beaten even-money favourite a class lower than today at Southwell. Tom Marquand, beaten twice on him, resumes on Social City today.

The mare Torochia has scored twice here at Lingfield but this is her first venture above and beyond 1m 4f.

I thought Royaume Uni would be odds on, but BETDAQ was a shade better than evens (2.06) when I rushed to the orange icons this morning.

SHE TURNS UP LIKE GOOD PENNY

⭕ 2.00 Catterick This is Sue Smith’s time of year, if she has the material, and the lightly-raced Small Present steps up in trip here, after some near misses over shorter in the autumn.

Legalized hadn’t won since his novice career before finally landing a handicap hurdle the last day and, oddly, now has the rating he was given then, two years ago.

The runner-up, Bryden Boy, is 11lb better off for 10 lengths which, in theory, is an equaliser.

When Big Penny won at Perth in September, the second and third both went on to take one of their next two races.

The mare was never out of the frame in five summer and autumn races – won two – and she returns with her trainer in good form and with a visor to give her a lift after the break. There was 5.8 on the BETDAQ BETTING EXCHANGE offers this morning.

VENETIA DOUBLE? EASY AS THAT

⭕ 2.30 Catterick Venetia Williams has four runners at her local track, Chepstow, but sends one up to Catterick, where she has the second highest strike rate of any Jumps meeting.

Quick Wave was in good form at this time a year ago, scoring at Leicester and beaten only a neck at Exeter, when she wore cheekpieces.

Things haven’t worked out for her this winter but the cheekpieces are back on today, and BETDAQ 6.8 looked good value when I checked out the orange offers.

⭕ 3.50 Chepstow Venetia’s Easy As That (BETDAQ 2.9 taken) has always been champing at the bit, in need of a stamina test.

It is no coincidence that he takes the step up for his first handicap and that the trainer sticks with his jockey in all four starts to date, Gavin Sheehan, though Charlie Deutsch rides for her earlier in the day.

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
