RAISE A GLASS TO SCRUMPY

3.40 Carlisle Mr Scrumpy might well be able to defy his penalty in this bumper. There was plenty to like about his win at Hexham last month where he drew clear on testing ground to win by 10 lengths.

The Jedd O’Keeffe trained runner was really impressive that day and again gets give in the ground.

I’m always wary about how tough it can be to defy a penalty in this sphere but I am making an exception as I think he’s a smart prospect and it doesn’t look a tough contest.

You could say it was a weak field, Weakfield is actually the danger – he won a point to point over a year ago on testing ground at Portrush. Hard to know what to expect from him today, except that he will probably be suited by a longer trip in time.

I K Brunel and Tarada are interesting debutants from top stables but Mr Scrumpy sets the bar quite high.

3.50 Southwell It’s felt a long time since we had racing on the Fibresand at Southwell and as always it remains a very specialist and unique surface where course experience counts for plenty.

In the closing novice stakes Point Zero should only need to reproduce his course and distance effort last time out to record a first win. He was pipped by Victors Lady.

Whilst Point Zero is still a maiden after seven starts, he has been racing over a longer trip for most of those races and the minimum looks his optimum trip.

National Anthem showed promised when a 20/1 fourth at Nottingham on debut but after a 404 day break must surely be a watching project today.

4.00 Kempton Tidal Watch was on four a four-timer before the weight seemed to prove too much at Worcester when he was a beaten even money favourite. He has since finished second on the flat here at Kempton but looks opposable.

Blushing Red and Rocket Ronnie are closely matched on Ludlow form when 1/2 length split them. They actually meet again on the same terms today but given Blushing Red made a shocking error at the second last at Ludlow he may well get the chance to not only confirm, but extend his superiority over the runner-up.

DAQMAN’S BETS (staked to win 20 points except SUPERNAP)

SUPERNAP BET 20pts win POINT ZERO (3.50 Southwell)
