BANKER STROLLS HOME 34 LENGTHS: Daqman moved all in on his best bet at Market Rasen yesterday, quoted 1.76 and 1.81 on BETDAQ in the morning, and Work In Progress (WON 8-11) duly landed his banker nap by 34 lengths and 35.

MONDAY TRIO: DAQMAN has a trio of bets on Monday including an interesting debutant in the opener at Ayr.

WHY THE WHIP IS A MAGIC WAND

Whipping up a story? Sounds like a red-top tabloid. But, since the Racing Post has 300 staff to justify themselves and, after all, it is the Silly Season, we can expect acres of turgid copy covered by a sensational headline.

The whips debate (that never was)? What racing needs to make it more accessible to the public? To name but two, as they say.

I suggest that deliberately raising the whip at a time when racing needs to make friends and influence people can only cause it to lose friends and suffer the influence of the misguided.

The paper persisted with The Whip Debate (which was, in fact, their own) until a confident rebuttal by Jim Boyle, in which he describes the whip as ‘a cushioned piece of foam absolutely incapable of causing any pain or marking skin.’

In short, it is a steering reminder and wake-up call to require an animal to use the ability it has been trained and cosseted to do, superbly groomed and preened and, in the main, fed with the most expensive and healthy equine fare.

So what we really need here is basic PR. For instance, instead of calling it the ‘whip’, we could perhaps spend – as promotions people do – countless thousands persuading people to call it a ‘wand.’

You only need a double-decker bus with a poster on it or a saccharine question in the House labelling the opposition as Venezuelan, and you can swing almost anything, whether your aim is to leave Europe or ingratiate yourself with the boss.

If a change of government and/or a realignment of trade and industry is made of such feeble stuff, then racing is surely in PR La La Land. So let’s have A Wand Debate.

I can just see the ads now: ‘All you need do is wave this piece of foam and you can win a Derby’. Pictured is a semi-clad female jockey showing some of her bits with the caption: Wanda wins again! She’s Classic.

LOOPY TO IGNORE THE BIG TOUR

1.45 Ayr It may be worth taking on the odds-on Another Batt, if you can find an alternative at a price. That alternative presented itself this morning as 5.0 BETDAQ offer Stormbringer, with 10.0 bar two, so seemingly a two-horse race.

Five horses behind Another Batt in his easy Ripon success of a month ago have all been beaten since.

Granted he was eighth in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot. That may be significant, or it may count for nothing. He is up a furlong here and has to give 7lb to the selection.

Stormbringer is an impressive individual, as revealed by the interest in this 50,000-guinea yearling, resulting in his sale as a two-year-old at almost four times that amount, 190,000 guineas.

His sire won on his racecourse appearance, and Stormbringer’s close relatives Bertie Royale and Rivas Rhapsody both won first time as two-year-olds.

4.25 Ayr It’s good to soft and conditions might appeal to Jack Dexter.

He’s an infrequent winner but is gradually being shown mercy by the handicapper and races off his lowest mark today since 2012.

He was fancied for last year’s Ayr Gold Cup on similar ground but could only finish 12th of 23. Still, this is no Ayr Gold Cup and there was encouragement as to his current well being at Newcastle last time out when a 16/1 fourth to Line Of Reason.

I’m covering the win bet with a BETDAQ place bet as a ‘stakes saver’.

8.35 Windsor I’m not sure the market has got it right here. Hyperloop (2.1) is favourite over Big Tour (3.3) at midday on BETDAQ but I prefer the latter.

Hyperloop was a staying on third at Kempton on debut behind the very easy winner Don’t Give Up but it was the horse in second place that’s of biggest interest. That was Right About Now who was a beaten odds-on favourite in a very modest Wolverhampton race next time out and Khitaamy (in fourth) also did little to boost the form subsequently at Chelmsford.

In short, the form looks unappealing as does the price about Hyperloop on his turf debut.

Big Tour shaped ok when runner-up to the odds-on Najashee at Haydock and looks a solid rival.

Unit Of Assessment showed improved form at Leicester last time but on good to soft ground so might not be as effective on tonight’s forecast good to firm.
