28-1 ‘COMET’ STREAKS HOME FOR DAQMAN: Daqman made it 50 points profit in two days when unraced-over-hurdles Countess Comet (WON 28-1) scored in the 1.45 Catterick. It was clearly signposted in his column, but in his tips summary he nominated the horse for the 1.45 Fontwell, not Catterick. Apologies.

BOLD NAP DUPED ON THE RAILS: Daqman’s own mistake made him more forgiving toward Daryl Jacob, who kept his nap, Bold Chief (2nd 11-4), on the bridle and unable to respond quickly enough to an attack on the rails after ‘missing out’ the last. Daqman’s naps are 22.70 in profit over five days, with winners at 9-2 and 6-5. His last six naps have finished 212312.

It’s 130.0 bar seven. Don’t be put off by the size of the field in the opener at Musselburgh: the race has horses from six stables on the ‘cold list’ and Betdaq offers on seven of the runners this morning were between 130.0 to 1000.0

You’d be forgiven for thinking that this was the start of a northern Flat racecard, with Mark Johnston and Richard Fahey saddling leading contenders.

Bowdlers Magic is only the second runner in five years over the sticks for Johnston and has a fair chance on CD form of just over three weeks ago. Fahey’s High Office is also improving, and Makbullet has already run well in a handicap.

But as we’ve seen in this column over the last few days, giving weight in these novice hurdles is hard to do, even for a winner.

Lemon Drop Red (12.40), getting 12lb from those three nearest rivals in the betting, represents another first in this race: as far as I can tell, trainer Paul Webber has never been up to Edinburgh before, not to race horses at any rate.

There’s a class-3 chase on the card, the Kilmany Cup, and that touch of class usually means the horses run more reliably than in the lower grades: Webber will be looking for compensation with Key Cutter (3.10) if Red drops a lemon.

Key Cutter is penalized 10lb for an 11-lengths romp on a sound surface at Leicester and part of the reason for this Webber long haul to Edinburgh must be to get this horse his ground.

Fred Bojangals has tried 3m only once before in 42 starts, and was beaten 92 lengths, and Everaard’s two CD wins were over hurdles not in chases. He tailed off last time he tackled a fence.

The veteran, Lutin Du Moulin, scored twice in the summer after five years absence from racing under Rules but the times were poor for the conditions. So around 3-1 Key Cutter looks good value.

At Huntingdon, Nicky Henderson should provide you with something to put with Lemon Drop Red in your Daq Multiples.

But it was 29.0 bar two in Ericht’s race (1.50) this morning and I could get a better price a place than for Ericht to win. My choice was Cold Knight.

Hidden away in this race, learning the ropes, is Hollow Heartbeat, a Flemensfirth out of an Oscar mare, who needs at least another mile and, for preference, some fences. One to watch out for later on when suddenly stepped up in trip.

After Problema Tic, and despite the ‘Best Mate family’ tag that will follow Special Mate all his life, Henderson has yet another favourite on the Huntingdon card with the grey, Brigadier Miller (3.50) in the bumper.

Otherwise the market had little to tell me this morning. Michael’s Nook (4.10 Wolverhampton) took over at the front of the betting but I couldn’t back a Barron at the moment, as his horses are running well below par.

Leyte Gulf (5.40) was new market leader, following the stable’s 28-1 winner yesterday but I thought that left Jamarjo looking a reasonable 5.3, with Robert Winston sure to have fire in his belly after the 22-day ban, an obvious candidate for a bet on Friday the thirteenth!
