7-2 WINNER FOR 24 POINTS PROFIT ON NEWBURY OPENING DAY: Daqman is the man for the big meetings and yesterday Lyvius (WON 7-2) and Meganisi (WON 7-4) gave him a 24-point start to the three-day Hennessy festival at Newbury: Meganisi was Daq Value at 3.3 when selected.

DYNASTE A STAR IN THE MAKING: Daqman declares for Dynaste, in a pathfinder race today that has produced top guns like Denman and Bobs Worth.

Don’t panic, Tom: Dynaste can go right to the top. Near-neighbour trainers Paul Nicholls and Colin Tizzard are out to ‘get’ Dynaste this afternoon. But I doubt the bookies will be.

Nicholls fields There’s No Panic, who goes well fresh, and Tizzard’s tongue-tied Theatre Guide is top rated of the field for the Berkshire Novices’ Chase (2.05) at Newbury.

2.05 Newbury But Dynaste looks the proverbial good thing to follow in the hoofprints of top guns like Denman, Punchestowns and Bobs Worth who won this race for the Henderson-Nicholls arsenals.

Bobs Worth turned over the Tizzard’s Cue Card last year on his way to taking the RSA at the Cheltenham festival. And it’s Theatre Guide for the same stable who looks the main danger after his 11-lengths dismissal of the highly-regarded Hinterland at Exeter. Dynaste is current RSA favourite.

2.40 Newbury Nothing older than seven has won this, yet the Pertemps Final itself invariably goes to older horses. The first conclusion is to treat every qualifier on its merits; secondly, the Final winner is unlikely to be in this line-up today.

It’s a very trappy contest for punters – and tipsters – but we can only bet in what races we are given, and at the prices on offer.

I took the 9.0 Destroyer Deployed, visored for the first time and with Barry Geraghty booked. The Champion Bumper runner-up may have most to fear from the consistent Ballybough Pat, who is unexposed at this trip.

If an older horse is to win it, Bakbenscher is the one, a soft-ground lover with an 11lb advantage here if he can translate his chase mark to hurdles.

3.15 Newbury Big weights have found it impossible to win this and Tataniano seems to be holding up the handicap for stablemate The Knoxs, ridden of course by Ruby Walsh.

Ruby (who declares his weight as 10st 2lb) is riding in two consecutive races with just a few pounds of ‘lead’ in the saddle and something ought to come out of Curtain Razer (16.0 on BETDAQ) and The Knoxs.

At 3.7, The Knoxs is clearly the one they ‘expect’: he’s a winner on soft and a useful animal when fresh, as he is today. He’s won before now after a year off.

Yet again, Henderson (Prince Of Pirates) and Tizzard (Pasco) appear the principal dangers to Ditcheat’s dominance, but I find that the ‘Prince’ has been fairly stagnant in class-3, both as a novice and against seniors, and Pasco has won only on good-to-soft ground.

The same applies to Bless The Wings and Matuhi, so I shall take the big, big offers about the seeming Henderson second-string, Giorgio Quercus, who won on the heavy stepped up to today’s kind of distance and has formed a habit of winning second time back.

It’s another first-time blinkers for the Geraghty! And 13.5 is another big-value BETDAQ offer. Henderson tells the trade paper: ‘Giorgio Quercus will have come on for his recent return in the Old Roan, He’s been pleasing us with his schooling over fences.’
