CLASH OF GOLD CUP ONE-TWO A RACE TO WATCH Today Daqman has a bull’s-eye bet and a supernap, both trained by Paul Nicholls. But he will ‘just watch’ in the revenge match between Might Bite and his Gold Cup conqueror Native River, with last year’s winner, Bristol De Mai and the once-mighty Thistlecrack also in the line-up. The headlines:

YES, HE’S THE GREAT PRETENDER
TRACK RIGHT FOR JUBILYMPICS
DOVER SOLE BET IN THE HANDICAP
POLITOLOGUE IN CHAMPION FORM
I’M BETTING NICHOLLS BY NAME

YES, HE’S THE GREAT PRETENDER

12.20 Ascot Only three winners in the decade have carried a penalty; none was older than six. These stats combined make it an Everest to climb for Hillary John.

Doux Pretender was pushed clear at Towcester in the Spring and the runner-up won six lengths on his reappearance. Bred for this step up in trip, as is Senior Citizen.

Stoney Mountain also pipped a subsequent six-lengths winner at Aintree in October but I got involved with Doux Pretender at 4.0 on BETDAQ this morning.

A £400,000 buy after an Irish point-to-point, Trevelyn’s Corn goes to post tongue-tied which, on his trainer’s record, means a wind op soon unless he earns his corn today. Chasing will be his game

1.05 Huntingdon Starjac finished clear of the remainder when runner-up at Fakenham and the winner, Didtheyleaveuoutto, followed up by beating a strong field at Ascot yesterday. The 2.8 on BETDAQ this morning could look generous later on.

TRACK RIGHT FOR JUBILYMPICS

1.30 Ascot After only one win in 20 starts, Henry Daly watched Mish Mash trot up by 11 lengths at Newton Abbot. So did the handicapper.

And, when the mare ran well again, second at Hereford on the last day, he sanctioned an overall 17lb hike in the ratings. She is 0-8 going right-handed.

Intriguing to note that Henry also runs Petronella Manners, thought capable of trying a mares’ Listed at Cheltenham on her penultimate start, yet 15lb lower now, and carrying the minimum 10st.

Fourth in front of her that day was Jubilympics, who has won both her starts on a clockwise track (2-3). Compare with Kentford Heiress (0-14).

Third in the Cheltenham race, Oscar Rose has been front-running since, winning a modest affair at Worcester.

Petticoat Tails, who was fifth, is the pick of the weights now after a wind op, with her trainer, Warren Greatrex, on a hat-trick after a double at Ffos Las yesterday.

I’ll stick with Jubilympics (BETDAQ 8.0 this morning) on this track, with 28.0 offers Petronella Manners interesting if she’d missed out Cheltenham (in way she did).

DOVER SOLE BET IN THE HANDICAP

1.50 Haydock Mr Antolini and Cyrus Darius would be the first winners of this over the age of seven but were both well backed last night.

Mr Antolini won the Imperial Cup after starting the year with success on heavy, but he ran well enough over further on good ground at Cheltenham in October.

Much of Cyrus Darius’ best form is history but wind surgery and switching to Colin Tizzard could revive his fortunes. The stable is striking at 25%.

Cliffs Of Dover was six out of seven up to Grade 2 over hurdles in 2016 and, after a year off, was productive on the Flat (three from six) until he led until weakening five out in the Cesarewitch: 7.8 on BETDAQ best as the Pricewise lemmings flocked to the bookies.

Chti Balko is 1412 at Haydock but needs the heavens to open, and two of Ch’Tibello’s three wins have come on heavy. Good ground will suit Magic Dancer and help him to get the trip.

The third horse in the Chepstow Silver Trophy in October won either side of finishing three lengths behind the Garo De Juilley.

Garo De Juilley, not wanted at 25-1, took advantage of a bad mistake by the favourite and shot clear in a slow-run race.

POLITOLOGUE IN CHAMPION FORM

2.05 Ascot From the Master Minded and Al Ferof stable of Paul Nicholls, one of the great hopes of my horses to follow list – soon to be a Fortune Cookie? – is Politologue, who has started out with a win for the past two seasons and is 6-6 going right-handed.

Charbel was around six lengths off Politologue last December but did better more recently, in October, when second giving 12lb, to the subsequent winner of the autumn gold cup at Cheltenham.

2.40 Ascot (Coral Hurdle) Previous winners Annie Power, Faugheen, Silviniaco Conti and Yanworth came to win this with ratings of 153, 154, 155 and 161, which recommends We Have A Dream (156).

So does the handicapper, whose assessment puts him 3lb ahead of If The Cap Fits at today’s weights, yet that one finished seven lengths up on ’Dream’ in the Elite Hurdle at Wincanton won by Verdana Blue.

Both sides are claiming that the step up in trip today will bring about improvement, and I’m taking 3.45 with which to dream that I can upset the odds-on favourite.

3.00 Haydock (Lancashire Chase) Might Bite is expected to avenge his Gold Cup defeat by Native River, with last year’s winner, Bristol De Mai, running off the same mark as the once-mighty Thistlecrack, and the youngster Clan des Obeaux needing to find only 8lb. What a race! I’ll watch.

I’M BETTING NICHOLLS BY NAME

3.15 Ascot Theinval, usually a Spring horse, is said to be in good shape for his return but has won only once after a break (1-11).

Cyrname could step forward from his reappearance run and has won both his chases going right handed. He’s another from my horses-to-follow list who has to prove he’s a Fortune Cookie today.

Cyrname has been going off in front over 2m 4f and the drop back in trip should suit if he can slow it down a bit, then use his stamina.

Ozzie The Oscar has twice beaten Cyrname’s stablemate San Benedeto and a third Paul Nicholls runner, Modus, looks more interesting, nine times a winner, six of them at this time of year.

He won on his reappearance, pipping Duke Of Navan who had been well behind Theinval in his previous race. I think that, if you back Cyrname (5.0), you have to back Modus (7.0).
