THE LAW ACCORDING TO WILLIE

3.40 Newmarket (Cesarewitch) There’s a story in every race, and a headline to go with it. Let’s try to ‘read all about it’ in advance!

FIRST three-year-old for 40 years to win the Cesarewitch? That banner would not be quite right if 6.4 shot Southern France wins.

The runner-up in the Queen’s Vase and third in the St Leger, a rare injection of class from Ballydoyle, would be the first second-season animal WITH MORE THAN 9st since Centurion in 1978.

Southern France’s brothers stayed only 1m 4f and a field of 12 is the biggest he’s been seen in so far.

But the form book boldly declares in its post-race St Leger analysis: ‘He’s all about stamina and could be the Ballydoyle Ascot Gold Cup horse of years to come’.

FIRST woman rider to win the Cesarewitch? Six hurdles wins out of seven; three Flat successes from four. Cliffs Of Dover was massive at 38.00 on BETDAQ this morning to give Paul Nicholls’ daughter, Megan, magnificent me-too status in a race the boys have won for its entire 180 years.

STAR apprentice wins Cesarewitch? When Law Girl won at Gowran Park in the summer, trainer Willie Mullins was asked if the Lawman mare would go back hurdling.

No, he said, he had no interest in hurdles for her. ‘If she could be guaranteed dry ground on the Flat, she could win a big handicap and make good money at the sales at the end of the year’.

Whereupon he booked star apprentice Jason Watson for 30.0 BETDAQ offer Law Girl, one of the stable’s seven runners.

But it’s another nearly headline because Jason lost his claim at Kempton on Monday night and is now on 96 career winners.

He was still claiming 5lb when he won the Goodwood Stewards Cup on Gifted Master, so rapid has been his rise to the top (now 12th in the senior jockeys’ table). Will the loss of his 3lb claim make the difference today?

JOCKEY plot steals the Cesarewitch? Vis A Vis (13.0) is two from two since switching to Neil Mulholland, including when he slammed the race’s benchmark Just In Time at Kempton, and has always had this as his target.

Has won from the front ; has won from behind; stays like the mother-in-law. And Silvestre De Sousa long ago booked to land a big prize to revitalise the Bath stable and give himself four Cesarewitch winners in six seasons.

Daqman’s order in: 1 Law Girl, 2 Southern France, 3 Cliffs Of Dover, 4 Vis A Vis, 5 Uber Cool, 6 Golden Spear

The ABC final top 10: 1 Golden Spear, 2 Making Miracles, 3 Uber Cool, 4 Merie Devie, 5 Its’afreebee, 6 Cliffs Of Dover, 7 Law Girl, 8 Coeur de Lion, Vis A Vis, 10 Royal Reserve.

ADVERTISE MEANT FOR MEADE..

2.25 Newmarket There’s a bit of money, inevitably, for Ballydoyle’s Magna Grecia; the rest only nibbled at. And my man dans l’herbe longue insists that Persian King is a ‘machine.’

The Kingman colt comes over from France, 2.56 favourite on BETDAQ this morning, after five lengths and six lengths Chantilly victories.

3.00 Newmarket (Dewhurst Stakes) The big three trainers of the current British Flat season – sharing £15m prizemoney won – are here to stake their claims to next season’s Classics.

AIDAN O’BRIEN, who has won four of the last five Dewhursts, saddles three of the seven-strong field. And I mean strong!

JOHN GOSDEN and SIR MICHAEL STOUTE both saddle unbeaten colts, and the official ratings say that the benchmark juvenile Advertise is pitching right in among them. The official ratings are

119 Anthony Van Dyck (O‘Brien at 5.3 on BETDAQ)
116 Too Darn Hot (Gosden 1.98)
112 Advertise (Martyn Meade at 12.0)
110 Christmas (O’Brien)
106 Sangarius (Stoute)
103 Kuwait Currency (Richard Hannon)

The figures do a disservice to Kuwait Currency, if collateral form can be believed: on a line through Dubai Dominion, he’s in front of Sangarius, not the 3lb behind of his 103 official mark.

And on the half-length that separated them in the Curragh Futurity, you could argue that, if Anthony Van Dyke is a 119, then Christmas is on 118 (Mohawk well beaten third that day).

The only race in which Advertise was beaten was when second to Calyx in the Coventry and yesterday we saw the third horse home that day, Sergei Prokofiev, scoot clear in the Cornwallis. Can Advertise get the 7f?

There’s no doubt that Too Darn Hot was impressive in powering home at Sandown and Doncaster but, as this collateral form mounts up, and the pieces of the jigsaw fall into place, the picture that emerges is possibly a Van Dyck but equally it could be argued that Advertise is meant!

‘TOMMY’ GUNNING FOR SPRINT

3.15 York (Coral Sprint) I nominated Teruntum Star for a repeat in this York race after the Ayr Gold Cup: he’s within a pound of last year’s winning mark, and looks well drawn in gate 2.

Winners by stall in the decade: Low 1, 2 and 4 have won three; middle stall 9 two; high 14 to 19 four.

One for the middle is Tommy Taylor, with Jamie Spencer swerving Newmarket. Tommy was the gamble at Ascot the only time Spenny rode him but they got there half a furlong too soon; unusual for the big-field ace rider. He’ll want this.

The high number has to be Flying Pursuit who was on the wrong side in the Ayr Gold Cup. My three respectively in the BETDAQ orange were: 10.5, 15.0 and 6.4.

5.00 York Dominating (9.4 BETDAQ offers) came second in the stats and facts that made up my Cesarewitch ABC, but just missed the cut.

A 45% strike rate in the first two on Flat turf and 8lb lower now than for 2m 2f class-2 Pontefract trophy winner nearly a year ago. Had also won the Gordon Carter at Ascot.
