PENGUIN’S RATING CAN BE RAISED

⭕ 2.40 Salisbury today: Penguin Island made a good start to the season in her first handicap at Leicester in April, looking like a sure future winner; but she’s on only 74 here in a class-5.

The winner that day at Leicester is now an 87 and runs in the Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot next Thursday.

Penguin Island, giving him a couple of pounds, would have been much closer but was hampered inside the final furlong.

Her trainer, Henry Candy, shows a 17-point profit to level-stakes punting on his runners at Salisbury with a 21% strike rate (10-48) in the last five years.

BETDAQ BETTING EXCHANGE 5.5 Penguin Island

BENEFIT COULD BE MARKED HIGHER

⭕ 3.50 Salisbury (Cathedral Stakes, 6f Listed): Three-year-olds have sneaked in this Listed with their allowance at this time of year and won four of the last six renewals.

Clive Cox has one, appropriately called Benefit, receiving between 8lb and 13lb in today’s race. BETDAQ 3.9.

She gets on well with jockey John Fahy. They were beaten just a couple of lengths, third, at levels in the Cecil Frail last month under tender handling but making up ground to the line against a hat-trick achiever.

The runner-up, who had been second in the Cheveley Park in September, is a 111-rated filly, yet Benefit is officially 95.

The four-year-old in the race today, Method, lost her form at Group level, after being runner-up in the Cornwallis in October, 2020, and hasn’t been seen for 330 days.

But be warned that her trainer, Martyn Meade, won this with a similar sort, returning from a 253-day break and heavily backed (race run at Goodwood).

Older fillies and mares have a poor record in this, and Nahaarr is another reappearing after a long absence (358 days).

JAWWAAL UP FOR A CD FOUR-TIMER

⭕ 3.57 Doncaster Michael Dods bids for a hat-trick in this race by saddling last year’s winner, Jawwaal, off just 2lb higher.

The dry ground is in his favour and his CD record is 111. Dods landed a double on Friday, both ridden by Connor Beasley, and it’s clear that Jawwaal is poised for a return to form.

Donning cheekpieces didn’t boost Digital the last day but dropping back to the minimum trip may help.

Ready Freddie Go’s winning form in the last 14 months has all been at Thirsk. Burning Cash has won only his maiden, invariably a bad sign.

His stable – Paul Midgley’s – has two other runners, Saluti and Ballintoy Harbour, both big drifters when the market opened. I took BETDAQ 2.4 Jawwaal.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….

Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
