EMBITTERED BIG BETDAQ 21.0

12.30 Fairyhouse A juvenile hurdle of eight winning favourites in the decade but, if you back the market leader blind, you may have to wait until the ‘off’ to know which of Joseph O’Brien’s pair to be on: A Wave Of The Sea or Cerberus.

It’s a choice made all the harder, since they finished a neck apart in that order, when they met at Punchestown in the Ladbrokes 4-Y-O Hurdle in October. Both have won since.

1.00 Fairyhouse (Royal Bond Novice Hurdle) This Grade 1, won six times by Willie Mullins in nine seasons, including with Nichols Canyon, has Envoi Allen and Abacadabras (both Gordon Elliott), a strongly fancied pair, to stop him this time.

But it’s no two-horse race. Third in Envoi Allen’s February bumper at Leopardstown, and a length off Abacadabras in the Coyningham Cup at the Punchestown Festival, Embittered turned sweet in his maiden hurdle at Naas.

He beat Blackbow (Cheltenham Champion Bumper fifth) in a big field that day, when conditions changed to heavy and he wore a hood.

Envoi Allen has been backed off the boards as they used to say, leaving Abacadabras (7.6) and Embittered (21.0) at enormous odds in the BETDAQ orange. I’ll cover my rear by putting Envoi Allen in my doubles.

FAKIR NEWS IN THE DRINMORE

1.30 Fairyhouse (Drinmore Novice Chase) Venetia Williams won one of the top novice chases at the Newbury meeting – Friday’s Ladbrokes Chase for the Fulke Walwyn Trophy – with a four-year-old, ex-French, Fanion d’Estruval.

Now here’s another ex-French four-year-old, Fakir d’Oudairies, trying to follow the trend and become the first-ever winner of the Drinmore for that age group since its foundation in 1994.

Trainer Joseph O’Brien has spotted that ‘Fakir’ gets eight lengths start. In fact, the 8lb allowance he receives might weigh even heavier on his opponents than face value in the soft ground.

The weight concession has already helped him whip an older horse, the Champion Hurdle runner-up, Melon, when they met over fences at Navan three weeks back.

Samcro was back to form on the last day with a tongue-tie fitted, but has to give 8lb to Fakir d’Oudairies, who was worth the nap at 2.36 on BETDAQ.

DAVY RUSSELL RIDES OUT..

2.05 Fairyhouse (Porterstown Chase) Top stables don’t always get a look-in here (Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott just one win each in the decade), and older horses, aged 9 and 10, have taken five out of the last six.

Monbeg Notorious (Elliott), on 11st 10lb, compresses most of the field, with stablemate General Principle the only other runner on 11st or higher.

Ask Susan sounds like one of those Alexa devices, in which case my question is: how on earth are you favourite for this after just one win in 12 starts since your maiden? The answer must be: because this is a poor Grade B handicap.

The Gatechecker, third in last year’s Cork Grand National, hit winning form in the same race on the last day, but a 7lb penalty opens the gate for the runner-up, Glorious Galway, and the third, Aherlow, both likely improvers at seven years old.

It also points up Out Sam (Elliott) , who won that 2018 Cork National in which The Gatechecker was third, and then ran well in the Troytown. Davy Russell is back in the plate for the first time since those days.

Irish Grand National winner of 2018, General Principle (Elliott again) was third in the Punchestown Grand National Trial in February but pulled up back here at Fairyhouse, going for the National double, and has not been seen since.

I always have time for a Gavin Cromwell runner but Global Racing is only six, and so far seems to need top of the ground to be seen at his best. I thought 13.5 Out Sam looked best value on BETDAQ.

LET’S HAVE A TASTE OF HONEY

2.40 Fairyhouse (Hattons Grace Hurdle) Apple’s Jade is under a cloud as she bids for a record fourth consecutive success in this race.

Disappointing favourite three times after winning the Irish Champion Hurdle in February, then odds on after a break in November but made no impression on Bacardys.

Bacardys stayed on strongly that day but giving Apple’s Jade 7lb today allows the mare a chance of revenge, if she’s still up to it. Paul Townend has picked Bacardys over the long-absent three-miler Penhill.

Even if we ‘believe’ the Bacardys form and ditch Apple’s Jade, Bacardys still has to give 7lb to Honeysuckle, which brings their ratings dead level but doesn’t allow for improvement in the youngster.

Yes, the unbeaten Honeysuckle, 4-4 at Fairyhouse, is still only five but Apple’s Jade won it at four. What with poor form and a penalty against her rivals, conditions are right for Honeysuckle (2.8 BETDAQ taken) to blossom in the big league.
