BALLET GOOD 8-1 STRIKE FOR DAQMAN: Pricewise finally got a hit yesterday (12-1 Medahim) against the runaway season for Daqman but Betdaq’s value king struck back with 8-1 John Smith’s winner, Ballet Concerto, and a brace of bold outsiders at 50-1 and 25-1 offers, both in the frame for place money in the Bunbury Cup. It all takes Daqman 234 points clear with the returns score Daqman 53, Pricewise 9.

GOLD BANKER UP IN THE IRISH OAKS: Daqman also landed a gold banker in the Irish Oaks, his eighth winning Classic of the season, making up back-to-back Daqman naps. Here is his weekend haul so far:

MAGICAL DAY FOR BALLYDOYLE

2.05 The Curragh Rhododendron’s sister, Magical, makes her fledgling leap in a race Ballydoyle has won three times in the last seven years, including with Tapestry (Yorkshire Oaks) and Misty For Me (Moyglare, Marcel Boussac and Irish 1,000 Guineas).

Because Dawn delibvers has chased home a group-2 runner-up, she is favourite this morning, which gives us 3.0 Magical from the same stabke that beat Dawn delivers. It will be interesting to see how the market goes (see Plays And Lays).

3.45 The Curragh (Minstrel Stakes) Gordon Lord Byron goes for a hat-trick in this Group 2 today but eight races this year already may have left their mark, and he’s nine years old now, and giving six years to the Classic generation.

It’s last-chance saloon for Peace Envoy, a big, strong Power colt, winner of the Anglesey here a year ago, then third in the Morny.

Refused to settle in first-time blinkers in the St James’s Palace at Royal Ascot but, sometimes, taking them off again next time – as today – can do the trick.

Ballydoyle’s principal representative is Spirit Of Valor, Jersey Stakes runner-up to the French 2,000 Guineas second. Mubtasim was third and we now know that one was trying to catch an angel, literally, when also third to Harry Angel at Haydock Park.

Dutch Connection, who has won top 7f races, the Jersey and the Lennox, in the last two seasons, was late back this year but drops down from Group 1 for the first time in more than a year.

Pricewise takes a well-earned rest today after tipping a winner. I’ll give him Dutch Connection but I shall side with the younger generation and a Ballydoyle one-two with Spirit Of Valor (BETDAQ 4.3) and Peace Envoy (28.0) to at last grab a big-odds place.

4.10 Maisons-Laffitte (Prix Messidor) Another clash of the generations, which Newmarket Guineas third, Al Wukair, ought to win. He’s dropped in class here but it’s a worry that he hasn’t been seen since that day in early May, and Taareef is on a hat-trick (four from five) of Group races below the top grade.

4.15 The Curragh Late-starter Surrounding, a lovely big filly, has already shown that she can be put anywhere in a race, and has a gear change.

Jet Streaming and New Terms are progrsssive three-year-olds but are close to the older horse in the handicap. It’s a race to follow the market and have more than one go but 7.6 Surrounding was the obvious starting position.

EYES DOWN FOR DOUBLE WHAMMY

4.10 Perth With Eyes of A Tiger likely to hare off in front, this could be set up for six-year-old improver The Jazz Singer, not disgraced in a much better race (125-153) on the last day and with Paul Townend (4-6 at Perth) in the saddle.

Eyes Of A Tiger has beaten only six horses home in poor times for his two chase wins yet has been tonked with a 10lb rise.

Tom George is in great form but Valseur Du Granval’s victories have come at shorter trips and wasn’t much fancied at 9-1 his first attempt at 2m 4f on t he last day. A second in that race doesn’t sound too bad but, in fact, only three finished.

So I’m trying a double whammy here, with a nap on The Jazz Singer at 4.4 on BETDAQ in the orange early mouse, and a lay Eyes Of A Tiger.
