KING GEORGE CROWN MAY SLIP

The King George rematch may have gone West! The two Derby winners, Desert Crown (Epsom) and Westover (the Curragh), may not now meet again until the autumn.

Desert Crown has suffered a setback. Though the colt has only a minor injury to a foot, Sir Michael Stoute is taking extra precautions and the Derby winner will miss vital days’ work for the rest of the week.

Westover, unlucky behind Desert Crown at Epsom, but who made no mistake in the Curragh version, is now likely odds-on favourite for the King George at Ascot on Saturday week (July 23).

Torquator Tasso, last season’s shock Arc winner, is confirmed as an Ascot probable.

PLAYING THE GAME AT LEICESTER

⭕ 2.40 Leicester This novice stakes race of 1m 2f is one Saeed Bin Suroor has farmed, with three winners from three runners in the last five years, and Game Master, one of six mounts for Hollie Doyle today, is a fair offer at 3.75 on Betdaq Betting Exchange.

Ralph Beckett and Rob Hornby, who were second at the July Meeting with Bullace, in fast time on firm ground, could go close with Bullace’s half-sister, Oriole, after a promising start at Windsor.

The Nathaniel filly gets 7lb from the Nottingham winner, Qabilah, whose placed horses are nothing of note, and 17lb from Sea Speedwell, who beat nothing well at Kempton in December, and hasn’t been seen since.

PATRICK SARSFIELD BIG AT 9.0

⭕ 7.20 Leopardstown (Meld Stakes, 1m 1f Group 3) Trevounance won over a mile at Limerick in slow time and three-year-olds have a fairly modest 2-10 record in this.

Success for Boundless Ocean (BETDAQ 4.7) would boost the Irish Oaks hopes on Saturday of Cairde Go Deo who was always doing enough to hold him off at the finish of the King George V Cup here at Leopardstown last month (slow-run race).

Boundless Ocean, who ran in both the Newmarket 2,000 Guineas and the Irish Derby, is best suited to this 10 furlongs and this represents his best chance in a Group race.

Bear Story has kept strong company but needs some cut in the ground to show his best. The trip suits Georgeville but he’s never won above Listed level.

The 2020 winner of this, Patrick Sarsfield, who is neck and neck with Bear Story on Naas form (yielding) but has the better chance on top of the ground and should be sharpened up by first-time cheekpieces. He’s big on BETDAQ at 9.0

SOFT GROUND SUITS BODEGON

⭕ 7.50 Longchamp (Grand Prix de Paris, 3yo 1m 4f Group 1) Andrew Fabre has won this 14 times and Aidan O’Brien 5, but no sign of them today, as the home team is led by Francis-Henri Graffard (second leading French trainer with 66 winners) and the raiders by Donnacha O’Brien.

Graffard saddles L’Astronome, unbeaten this season, including the Group-2 Hocquart, but is first-time tongue-tied this evening.

O’Brien is responsible for Piz Badile, the Ballysax winner (1m 2f), who was runner-up in the Irish Derby, albeit seven lengths off the winner, Westover.

El Bodegon is the soft-ground horse, landing a double in France last backend, one of them a Group 1, and running up to Vadeni in the French Derby last month. BETDAQ 7.8.

A badly-drawn Onesto was nearly two lengths further back, fifth, but the filly he’d beaten in the Greffulhe folded tamely at the finish of the Diane, despite a tongue-tie.

Eldar Eldarov won the Queen’s Vase (on firm) for Roger Varian and his chance depends on the pace but conditions favour James Ferguson’s El Bodegon, who is rated 113 to Piz Badile’s 111 and Eldar Eldarov’s 109.
