20-1 CAMBRIDGESHIRE CONTENDER JOINS THE FORTUNE COOKIES: Among those revealed in Daqman’s stats on the featured Lartigue Hurdle at Listowel yesterday was the 25-1 winner but he preferred the second horse home, Anna Bunina (2nd 9-1). ‘So read my analysis and check out my reasoning!’ says our humbled tipster. He’ll have two more cracks at the festival (tomorrow’s Kerry National and Friday’s Ladbrokes Handicap) which humbled all reasoning yesterday with a 125-1 winner on the card. Meanwhile Daqman spots a 20-1 chance in the Cambridgeshire for his Fortune Cookies (see Power To Big-Race Dark Horse).

🗓️ TOMORROW: beat the favourite in the Kerry National

POWER TO BIG-RACE DARK HORSE

FORTUNE COOKIES: Whitsbury, which once housed the massive Desert Orchid, now has stars of a more slender thoroughbred stature trained by ‘dandy man’ Marcus Tregoning.

Marcus, who won the Derby with Sir Percy, has produced poetry in motion in Alkumait, winner of Saturday’s Mill Reef, and he’s a man to follow when in form.

Once a year I nominate a ‘hidden horse’ for the Fortune Cookies, likely to be a huge price in one of the end-of-season handicaps, and my man in the long grass not a million miles from the Whitsbury gallops tells me to be on Power Of Darkness.

Dark-horse Darkness, who won 2-2 last summer, is an acceptor for Saturday’s Cambridgeshire for which he is generally quoted 20-1, after money last night for an opening 25-1.

Highly regarded by Tregoning despite a chequered career. ‘I have always thought him a decent horse. He’s had his problems but has responded well to gelding and a wind op.’
Given a quiet run back on the Rowley Mile course in June.

Meanwhile, Campanelle swerves Saturday’s Cheveley Park to go straight to the Breeders Cup. Probables at Newmarket for Fortune Cookies are:

Kameko Joel Stakes, Newmarket, Friday
Dandalla Cheveley Park Stakes, Newmarket, Saturday
Power Of Darkness Cambridgeshire, Newmarket, Saturday
Lucky Vega Middle Park Stakes, Newmarket, Saturday

ALSO: Addeybb, Aramon, Art Power, Battleground, Campanelle, Chil Chil, Dream of Dreams, Enable, Fancy Blue, Fanny Logan, Glass Slippers, Highest Ground, Persian King, Tarnawa, Thunder Moon.

ADDED: Alkumait, Power Of Darkness

DELETED: Bahrain Pride

LAST WEEK’S HEADLINE HORSE: ‘Addeybb is back at the weekend.’ And how! He landed Daqman’s highest-stakes bet for five years when he won the Doonside Cup at Ayr.

NO APOLOGIES FOR NAP

⭕ 2.05 Beverley Idoapologise ran into one in La Trinidad on his last start which came here over a slightly longer trip in June.

La Trinidad has gone on to win (by five lengths) at Doncaster and has run respectively in better class races since – at up to class 2 level.

His trainer James Bethell has had three winners from his last 10 runners.

Stall one isn’t ideal but the draw effect at Beverley is much more pronounced over the sprint trips and even then not as significant as it used to be.

Harbour Vision continues to run well but a 7lb penalty for his Chelmsford win earlier in the month might well halt his current progress and a bigger danger may come from Fred who was a good second at Musselburgh and should be suited by the step back in trip.

EARLY KNIGHTCAP FOR EASTERBY

⭕ 3.15 Beverley Knightcap can be another winner for Tim Easterby who, as regular readers will know, is a trainer I said to keep a close eye on in the second half of the season.

The negative first – the filly is only 1-15 but her sole success came off the same handicap mark as today and there were definite signs that another win could be close judged by her close up effort at Yarmouth last time out where she was beaten just half a length into fourth in what was a better contest than this.

The cheekpieces are fitted for the first time and hopefully will have a positive impact and as mentioned above the stall 7 draw is not too bad over the sprint trip.

LIGHTING UP HAGGAS DOUBLE

⭕ 6.10 Newcastle Light Refrain, who failed by a length to make all at Salisbury, drops back a furlong, and down three levels on one of trainer William Haggas’s favourite tracks.

Haggas, who has a staggering current record of six winners from his last 13 starters, has spotted Daniel Tudhope for the spare ride. The axis enjoy a 50% strike-rate when teaming up together.

The stable suffered an eye-catching reverse yesterday when Dhabyah was beaten at 1/16 in a three runner novice stakes at Leicester but that major blip aside are ticking over quite nicely over the last 14 days with a 24% strike-rate.

Haggas and Tudhope also team up with Titian in the 5.40 who sets the form standard for debutant Alpha King to aim at and is taken as the first leg of a Haggas north-east double.
