HENDERSON IS ALWAYS HOT TODAY AT NEWBURY: Excellent racing today, competitive at both Newbury and Ludlow, with open betting and big value on BETDAQ. Daqman warns that it’s usually Nicky Henderson’s day to show off his young bloods but he naps an Irish raider and fancies a Colin Tizzard horse to make its mark.

HENDERSON SHOULD START IN STYLE

12.30 Newbury This juvenile hurdle last year produced the runner-up in the Fred Winter, Style De Garde, whose half-brother, Style De Voie, should score today, unbeaten on the Flat and over hurdles, though just one run in each discipline. A Nicky Henderson banker for your Daq Multiples.

1.05 Newbury Henderson has another big chance here via Rathhill, a close relative of Bellshill, the Punchestown Gold Cup winner for Willie Mullins.

Henderson has saddled the winner of this maiden hurdle four times in nine years. May prove to be value at 3.8 in the BETDAQ orange.

CHRISTMAS ROBIN YOUR 10.0 BIRDIE

1.25 Ludlow Venetia Williams 3, Nigel Twiston-Davies 2 is the score in this class-2 chase over the last six seasons.

Venetia’s Un Prophete has a checkered career: failed to finish four times, won three, from 11 chase starts. Risky investment.

The ‘Twiston’ runner, Robinshill, loves Ludlow and has dropped to his lowest mark since back-to-back wins over the CD here just over a year ago: 10.0 on BETDAQ looked too big early mouse.

Their target is Capeland, who is super-consistent but his ‘seconditis’ (form 242222112) was broken only by a double ‘at home’ around Wincanton last month. He’s going up in the ratings again soon so is nipping in under the weights radar.

Sternrubin also won twice (in three starts) in the autumn but his mark is still below last year’s.

Harry Whittington’s Bigmartre is a CD winner but seems to prefer top of the ground, and Mercian Prince needs another half-mile.

MALARKY ALL SET TO MAKE HIS MARK

1.40 Newbury I put up Mister Malarky to win first time over fences and he did so, despite a few anxious moments.

I said afterwards that a step up in trip would help his jumping, and here he is trying another half-mile.

This is a horse with a future and, though the third horse on his winning debut, Chosen Path, is better off at the weights, I hope to see Malarky make his mark for Colin Tizzard. BETDAQ 5.8 offers this morning.

MAGIC MARE HAS THE FORM TO WIN

2.15 Newbury Jessica Harrington, who has runners at Dundalk and Thurles before the Christmas break, saddles Magic Of Light a lone raider here from Kildare.

Her team has shown little return lately (0-24) but Magic Of Light, who won the Glencarraig Lady Mares’ Handicap at the Punchestown Festival, belied the stable’s poor form with a decent third in the Ladbrokes’ Troytown at Navan last month.

The Punchestown race may be undervalued, ratings wise, as the third horse, Synopsis, came out and won 10 lengths at Cheltenham last week, giving 8lb to the runner-up.

Drinks Interval failed to make the transition from novice events when a faller on the last day.

His value to us is as a destabiliser to Pearl Royale (who did make the transition). Both are front runners and I’m hoping they will worry each other out of it and leave Magic Of Light with the prize: 5.1 taken on BETDAQ.

GET AWAY! GO HARAMBE FOR A PLACE

2.45 Newbury A rare novices’ hurdle at Newbury, in that Nicky Henderson has had fewer winners (2) in the decade than Alan King (3) and only the same number as Philip Hobbs (2).

These usual suspects clash, with Alan King also well in front on quality of winners, thanks to Uxizandre (2012), who went on to win the 2014 Manifesto Chase at the Grand National meeting at Aintree and the 2015 Ryanair at the Cheltenham Festival.

Harambe (7.6 on BETDAQ this morning) runs for him with a touch of class, second in the big bumper at the Aintree festival.

His hurdles career started with a hiccup (brought down as one of the joint favourites) but he ran well, second, on the last day, given time to enjoy himself. Surely learned a lot.

Tidal Flow made a promising start to his career at Kempton but beat a hurdles maiden of Henderson’s.

This brings us full circle back to Nicky’s dominance at Newbury. One – or both! – of his pair in this, Downtown Getaway and Beyondthestorm, are likely to be a deal better than the one Tidal Flow beat.

Beyondthestorm (Flemensfirth out of a Be My Native mare) is bred for chasing but Downtown Getaway, who cost twice as much, is out of a mare who was a half-sister to Chomba Womba, eight times hurdle winner, third in the Mares Hurdle at Cheltenham. Not much better than evens this morning, so a saver to a win-and-place bet on Harambe.
