HOPING FOR RIGHT TO PREVAIL

2.40 Ayr Elusive Theatre attempts back-to-back success in this for the Stuart Crawford stable that’s won it twice in three years.

The eight-year-old is blinkered first time, 8lb higher today, and his winning jockey of last season with 3lb allowance, J J Slevin, can no longer claim.

It means that Elusive Theatre must face the 2018 runner-up, One For Harry, off 10lb worse terms for three lengths.

Front-runner One For Harry has to give a stone to front-runner Aye Right. Yes, that’s Right; they both jump well and like to leave the others behind early.

The handicapper says that neither horse is improving. This is a bit hard on Aye Right, who tackled a class-2 handicap at Cheltenham on the last day, finishing around four lengths off the subsequent Ladbrokes Hurdle third, Speedo Boy.

Arthur’s Secret has a poor strike rate (1-23) but his stable is in form. Bryden Boy has slipped a stone down the handicap in the last year and was beaten only a neck at Uttoxeter just before Christmas.

Senor Lombardy is high in the handicap for what he did last season and, looking to a potential improver among the youngsters, it has to be Aye Right (BETDAQ 3.45).

HILL CAN RISE TO THIS AT 7.2

3.00 Hereford Another tough one, with four horses within a 1.5-point parameter in the BETDAQ orange as I write.

Dan Skelton is back in excellent form (8-40). His Frankie Rapper is consistent but almost a stone higher than for his sole hurdles success, which was on good ground in the Spring.

Western Wave was a CD winner on the last day but it puts him 17lb up on his only previous success, way back in October 2016.

Rosemary Russet, still without a win, was dropped back to novice company in November, pipped by a decent sort of Paul Nicholls.

The 7.2 BETDAQ offer about Gardiners Hill could be best. He would have 10lb more to carry if this were a chase – he’s won five – but his hurdles form is that much less inspiring, and his stable rarely has a runner, though its meal ticket, Dream Bolt, is due to run Saturday, so the team may be wound up. Sean Bowen gets on well with him.

Robert’s Star was 312 over hurdles in the Spring before going chasing and Nico De Boinville has won over fences on him, so knows him well. He needs to: Robert likes to stop in front, when he feels he’s done enough.

Present Times landed a hat-trick in 2017 but has not stood much racing since, with several long breaks. Chase End Charlie’s best form was also at that time. Looked very slow on the last day.

6.45 Newcastle Royal Prospect has been superbly placed for back-to-back success here at Newcastle. Has very little to spare over Nick Vedder on the book, but surged through a gap to beat him last time and the year younger horse can land the hat-trick.
