The Final Countdown…
It is coming down to the wire in some of the European World Cup 2014 qualification groups to secure places and play-off places for Brazil next summer and this next few days will see joy and sadness in equal measures as teams battle it out to be part of the greatest show on earth. Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland and Germany have qualified or as good as qualified but there are still some big nations to reserve their tickets to Copacabana beach. England have two not so easy home games to get through however any slip ups and their main rivals the Ukraine will be expected to pounce relegating the three lions to a potentially dangerous play-off place. Croatia, Bulgaria, Sweden, Greece , Bosnia, Russia and Portugal are all potential Play-Off candidates so any failings by Roy Hodgson’s men could seal a very tricky tie for later this year much to the annoyance of many a premiership manager!

Germany Expects….
This Friday evening Group C leaders Germany host the Republic of Ireland in Cologne where three points will deservedly secure qualification for Joachim Low’s national side. The Germans have been quite impressive with their always offensive and entertaining style and will certainly be in with a major chance of winning next year’s World Cup. The Cologne ‘RheinEnergieStadion’ will be full to capacity as the German fans will view ,and expect, this to be a celebration of qualifying and a football show will be demanded of their idols on the pitch. There is every reason to confidant they will get what they wish for as this German squad has been immense to date with it’s only failing being that freak result last year when conceding four late goals at home to Sweden to draw four all. In the German’s eight group games they have scored twenty eight (most of all the groups) and conceded seven (four in that one game!).

New King….
noelkingJust twelve months ago Germany went to Dublin and destroyed Ireland by six goals to one in a game that could and should have been worse for the home side. A year on and the teams contrasting fortunes are their for all to see. Germany progressing and Ireland digressing. The Football Association of Ireland finally parted ways with Giovanni Trappatoni and have installed interim manager Noel King (right) for the final two qualification games. Not many people outside of Ireland (or possibly in Ireland!) will be familiar with Noel King who has to his CV managed league of Ireland clubs plus the Ireland Senior Women’s team and now Ireland’s under-21 squad. Managing at senior level is a huge step up and whilst Coach King has been talking the talk the question is can he walk the walk?

The stand-in coach has talked up a big game in the past few days and even victory for his Irish team against all the odds however in previewing this game the reality is a lot bleaker for the confident Dubliner. Ireland arrive into this game away from home against one of the best teams in world football. They were beaten only a year ago by six goals to one in their own backyard and are coming into this game with out their two first choice centre halves. King has brought back in an array of players who were not wanted or had fallen out with Trappatoni, some who have not played at this level for a long time and WILL lack for pace. The only difficulty of writing up this preview is guessing which eleven start for Ireland as it could possibly be completely different to any that have started in the past two years. Irish captain and ultra regular starter Robbie Keane may not even start due to an ankle injury which must be quiet serious due to the fact that his LA Galaxy boss Bruce Arena has requested Keane be released form International duty.

Goals, Goals, Goals….
The reality of this game is that no matter which Irish eleven start it will not be good enough to beat or draw with the hosts. The Germans are not at full strength with injuries to strikers Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose however this is not a big deal for a squad as deep and talented as Germany. Low states Thomas Mueller will not be moved into the lone striker role instead opting to go with the young Gladbach striker Max Kruse. Their are stars through out from goalkeeper Neur to new Arsenal sensation Ozil, Real Madrid’s Sami Khedeira and the ultra consistent Philippe Lahm to name but a few.

Their are some in the Irish media who will tell you that finishing third in the group will help in the seeding for the next World Cup but the idea that the Irish players will be thinking of this as they lace up their boots in the dressing room pre-game is comedic. Ireland and King find themselves in the unenviable position of playing a game for pride and against one of the most attack minded teams in world football. So the options are, sit back and cling on for a minor defeat OR go and try secure pride in search of an unlikely victory. The option which I actually believe King & his team will go with is the second one and for me it is this tactic that will ensue one outcome, goals being scored….and hopefully lots of them….
