He now previews the Europa League Final between Dnipro and Sevilla

Into the unknown…

Dnipro and Unai Emery are two names that don’t set the world of football alight however on Tuesday night in Warsaw they will be centre stage in the 2015 UEFA Europa League Final. Dnipro play in the Ukrainian league which is annually won by either Shaktar Donetsk or Dynamo Kyiv. Sevilla manager Unai Emery, for some reason, still seems to be a relative unknown outside of Spain and considering his undeniable and proven managerial talent he is never linked with a move away from Sevilla. It is my opinion that it is only a matter of time before the forty three year old Spaniard will be at a so called ‘big’ club and it is then the media will come a calling.

Dedicated Dnipro…

The 2013-2014 season saw Dnipro finish second, their highest position in twenty years, and in turn qualifying them for the Champion’s League however after getting knocked out by FC Copenhagen the UEFA cup beckoned and so their fairytale journey began. This is a team who went into their last group F game in last place however miraculously ended up in second place behind Inter Milan. Marquee signings are not the way of either of these clubs and in the case of Dnipro household names would be hard to come by also (unless you live in the Ukraine). Ukrainian international striker Yaheen Seleznev, scored both home and away against Napoli to secure their place in this final however his tally of scoring only four goals overall in each of his last two seasons will not exactly have the Sevilla defenders losing sleep.

Out with the old…

Sevilla are the current Europa League champions and go into this final in flying form under the guidance of their expert coach Emery. Despite losing captain and playmaker Ivan Rakitic to Barcelona and Geoffery Kondogbia to Monaco last summer plus the previous summers sale of Jesus Navas to Manchester City then Sevilla’s victory in last season’s Europa Final plus getting to this years final in Warsaw is quite an achievement. Unai Emery brought in young players such as Carlos Bacca and Kevin Gameiro. Sevilla’s real strength lie in how disciplined their midfield operate as a unit. Stephan Mbia and Krychowiak are the water carriers while the experienced Jose Reyes , Ever Banega , Viadal and Vittolo all get on with creating chances and tracking back in unison.

Sevilla were defeated by three goals to two just a few weeks ago by Real Madrid (Ronaldo hat-trick) which was their only home defeat all season, another incredible achievement.

Unhappy ending…

The betting dictates that this will be a one sided affair and in my opinion this will be the case. Dnipro have an opportunity to create one of the most unlikely fairytale stories in recent football history considering their homeland’s traumatic past few years and as can so often be the case sport can bring some peace to a nation in distress, albeit briefly.

Record breakers….

Sevilla are going for back to back victories and will create their own history in completing a second back to back victory (champions in 2005-2006 & 2006-2007) plus collecting an unprecedented fourth title. In last season’s final Sevilla could not score against a compact Benfica side however expect a much different out come in this final. Los Rojiblancos have failed only once in their last thirty four games to score at least one goal and I would be shocked if they failed to register at least once against Dnipro. The Ukrainians will look to keep it tight and despite deservedly knocking out Napoli they will not yet have encountered the pace, style and pace of the men from Andalusia.
