Does it get any better than Djokovic and Federer on the clay in Rome?

Tennis fans and bettors around the world are in for a treat today, as two of the game’s “Big Four”– Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer– will square off in the final of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, the last (for these guys, anyway) clay court “warm up” tournament before the French Open.

Djokovic’s preparation for the French has been perfect, as he picked up tournament titles in Monte Carlo, Miami, and Indian Wells. As a matter of fact, the last time Djokovic lost was in Dubai back in February, when he fell to… you guessed it, Federer. The Swiss master prevailed in straight sets to take home the victory in Dubai (they met in the final), though he would lose to Djokovic three weeks later in the Indian Wells final.

At this point, Djokovic is the unquestioned number 1 player in the world, a title held by Federer for nearly a decade. Djokovic is in the midst of his prime while Federer is near the end of his career, and this is why the Serb is such a prohibitive favorite here. If you’re familiar with the Djokovic/Federer rivalry, though, you know that it’s always been extremely competitive, even as Djokovic has sort of separated himself from the rest of the “Big Four”. Federer leads 20-18 in the head-to-head rivalry, and the two men have split their last eight matches. Interestingly, when Federer beats Djokovic it’s usually in straight sets– his last three wins and four of the last five have been of the straight set variety– while the Djoker has dropped at least one set in each of his last five wins over Federer.

Armed with that information and also the knowledge that Federer has yet to lose a set in this tournament, it’s difficult for me to pull the trigger on a Djokovic straight-set victory, which, according to the odds, is the most likely outcome. However, I do expect Djokovic to triumph here– he’s been an absolute machine over the last couple of months, and you can be sure that Federer has his attention. BETDAQ is offering generous odds on a 2-1 Djokovic victory, and I suggest looking in that direction. Should be a good one…

Recommendation: Djokovic at 1.42, Djokovic 2-1 (sets) at 3.65
