GREYHOUND DERBY FINAL PREVIEW: Eyes down for the Greyhound Derby Final, and a cracking supporting card at Nottingham on Saturday. Jonathan Hobbs previews the big one and makes his picks.
All the action is on RPGTV and, heading into the £100,000 decider, Ireland hold a numerical edge over England with four finalists against the home side’s two representatives.
However, it’s Magical Bale who goes to traps favourite after a series of top-notch efforts in the qualifiers. He’s been beaten just once, in the first round, and looked sensational in the quarter-finals and semi-finals.
And he is certainly a backable price come Saturday’s final.
That’s because a trap one draw is not seen as ideal for Kevin Hutton’s star. He’s expected to move middle which might cost him valuable ground, but ‘he breaks, he wins!’ will be the mantra for supporters on the countdown to the weekend’s showpiece.
Ireland’s Skywalker Logan (Patrick Guilfoyle) holds the track record and is a powerful performer who is good enough if close enough, while his compatriot Clonbrien Prince (Graham Holland) has done nothing wrong with a series of great performances.
However, can he really cope with the striped jacket in a field of railers? Getting round Priceless Blake (Paul Hennessy) will require an electric start, although Clonbrien Prince has answered every question posed of him – as has Ballymac Tas (Liam Dowling).
The blue-jacketed runner aims to become a rare bitch winner of an English Derby and the way she held off Jaytee Taylor to qualify from last week’s semi-finals was top notch. There is a big run in this outstanding bitch – does she save the best for last?
